When I have children, I'll take them to church just for the same reason my parents took me, to instill proper morals in me. Once they're old enough to think for themselves, if they don't want to go church, I'll respect their choice, and not push them into something they don't want to do. If they chose to stop believing I will also respect that choice as well.
How far is too far?

I was about to go towards something like this...
A good parent, if they're lucky, will handle the issues with the least amount of conflict. Notice I said "good". And I am not even sure if I am making a valid statement here, because I'm over my head, I know that. I think that parents can have tremendous influence over their child. Just as with all inter-personal relationships...the "how" of what you do to raise your kid is just as important as the "what". Of course, if you're Nazi-Parent, anyone is going to rebel. I'm not saying religious parents are perfect. I hope that isn't what you see me implying.
What age is it that they have carte blanche to make their own decisions?

Well, there is an age where you have to cut the apron strings, and that age has to be decided upon between the parents and child.

Every child is different.
My brother had a job at 16 and was thinking for himself by that time. He'd made his decision to join the army at 16, joined shortly after his 18th bday.
I however, didn't realize I had the choice to do certain things until i was 18.
Personally I feel that once my kid in high school, I'll let them choose. If they chose not to go, then obviously they didn't care for it in the first place. If they continue to go then they must like the message given out by Jesus.
I think once in high school children need to start to think for themselves more, due to the fact that in 4 yrs they'll be going to college or at least be getting in the "real world." They don't need to be told what to do for they're whole life. They need to make their own choices.
And if the parent is reluctant to cut those strings, you end up with a 35 year old with a mommy complex!

I've noticed that people tend to get MUCH more defensive when debating religion than most any other topic!
Well, it's a pretty personal thing. And a lot of posts have come across as saying her kids are gonna turn out bad because she makes them go to church.
