Iraq, What's The Answer?

In the beginning of the thread they were talking about if they should split Iraq into Sunni and Shiite states. what do you think?

There are problems with that, seeing as how th majority of the oil, and thus power, will be in mainly one region, under one party's control. That would inevitably lead to abuse of power. I think dividing them into ethnic states is a good idea, but the oil problem has to be addressed.

I say no to splitting up the tribes. That just does not seem to work, look at Afghanistan, those bastards are never happy with anything you give them, it's not about land to them, it's not about money with most of them...They really feel like they are fighting for Gods favor, that is a thirst you cannot quench by giving them houses with indoor plumbing.

I think that we should continue to persevere - stay the course. We should continue to try to stop insurgents, terrorist cells, etc., continue to fight for order to be established so that plans can be made and goals can be set and met. I don't think it is our place to split Iraq up. If they want to create 3 states in Iraq (Sunni, Kurds, Shiite) - that will be up to them. It is imperative for Iraq to succeed in the middle east. If we stick with them through this long difficult journey to order and peace - it can have wonderful implications and possibilities for the whole region.

Most people choose to view everything in a negative light though. Hey - that's what sells advertisement.

I believe that if you do split them up it will just cause more problems. Can you imagine how crazy it would be on the border of those two countries? And as All Else Failed pointed out one side would inevitably dominate the other. In my mind splitting the country would not end well.

I'm curious, what would your plan of action be? I'm not coming after you, I just want to know what your thinking.
I already said, divide the nation into each party's respective area and have a oil union sharing program so not one region gets too powerful.

Then leave.

Probably won't happen though. The entire point of Iraq is to establish a permanent military base in the middle east to act as a springboard.

Iraq government could decide to split their country up into 'states'/'regions' - not separate countries. That may help them, it may not - all I'm saying is that it is their choice as to what they do. They are the ones that have to ultimately make it work.
