Why would you ask if it were a joke? Nobody is saying "The USA won the Vietnam war." The article is simply making the point that it wasn't the huge massive failure that people think it was.
Actually, I believe AllVenom made the case that the US did win.
We assisted free people for the better part of a decade, but when the political pressure became too great at home, we had to let them fend for themselves. Two years later they were no longer able to do that, and now live under Communism. It's not a complex view of the world, it's just simple math.
That's a nice oversimplification, and I commend you for it. Our involvement in Vietnam was also more than 12 years, so if you're going to insist on doing math here, make sure you add properly.
The Domino theory can be debated forever, but I stand on the idea that it is a sound principal, primarily because we've seen it happen in the past. It MAY not have worked out that way in the 60's and 70's, but it just as possibly could have.
Where has it happened in the past? In my own, and many others opinions, it's nothing more than a poorly executed response to paranoia about Communists and other "Un-American" activities taking place at the time. It seems far fetched to me that if we didn't stop Communists in Vietnam, that we'd eventually be fighting them on our shores. It's been a few years. Communism prevailed in Vietnam. Whaddya know -- we're still Americans.
