Shotgun is actually the safest way to go... If you miss your target, your shot won't go far risking others... providing you are using bird shot.. which is VERY effective up close and personal.

You have to be pretty close, since Cheney's headshot wasn't very effective.

You also have to be able to act before the attacker is too close. Inside 5 yards, and guns become almost useless. Inside 2 yards, and I'll take the gun off you.

A 12 gage shotgun will just about take your head off at 20 yards... that covers anyplace in or around your house...

And even if it doesn't, the person will not keep coming with a face full of birdshot.

If he's on PCP or Meth or whatever, he will. The military scraped the 9mm because after a few COM shots, the enemy was still charging at them.

If you are not confident being accountable for your shots, then I say get a taser. Still, you have to hit the target.

IDK... I like my 9mm and I'm an excellent shot with it... but if there was someone in my house and there was a pump shotgun next to my 9mm, I would grab the shotgun.

Just hearing that shotgun chamber a round would be enough to send most people running and if not, I know it has excellent stopping power without me worrying if the rounds are going through the walls hitting innocent people.

Too right about the pump action sound. EVERYONE knows that sound!

True there are circumstances that are ideal for a shotgun, and thus why law enforcement swear by it.

What about a grenade? That will stop them cold :D

LOL. And yourself, your wife, your kid, the milk man, mail man, and the UPS guy still outside in his truck.

Now a stinger grenade would do the job! Donnie could pop the door open enough to drop that stinger out, then close the door and listen to him squeal like a little girl!

I saw on Fox News this weekend that Chicago is fixing to start arming their police with full on assault weapons .. because of the increased gang activity this year.

The news reported them having 54 stabbings, 13 deaths, one situation being a quadruple homicide (and some other numbers that I can't remember now) in the last week alone .. the Mayor says he is fixing to "kick some ass".

They should've had assualt rifles ages ago.. The Secret Service here in DC have shotguns as well as MP5's and M4A2's. But the problem is, a lot of cops couldn't shoot to save themselves. Cops should have monthly qual's.

HEY! I didn't say it was a perfect plan... but it would stop them... :D

There is a HUGE difference between being an excellent shot at the range (you and me) and being an excellent shot under pressure (I hope you and I never have to find that out). Having said that, this is why I keep my sawed-off 12 gauge within arm's reach of my bed (locked in a box, but I know where the key is hidden - it's close), so we are trackin there.

Yet another reason the 870 is close by.

As far as I'm concerned, it's personal preference whether to go the shotgun route or decent caliber hand cannon. Win win...

And if you are REALLY EXTREMELY serious about being the protector in the house hold. You'll go learn some sort of hand to hand combat. Guns are like any other machine. They can stop working at any given time. Even a glock!

Well I guess it does help that I'm 6'4" 210 lbs and studied Okinawan Isshinryu for several year... It's been quite a while since I went, but it's amazing what you retain. All in all, I'd much rather have a weapon in hand.

And you're right GP, there is nothing that prepares you to fire in a stressful life and death situation. I would just hope that shooting thousands of rounds through my gun would help train my muscle movements making as close to second nature as possible. Plus the fact that I'm on my home turf, he would be just as scared and I have a greater incentive (protecting my family) than he does. So in that 1 in a million chance that I am ever faced with this situation, I hope that I have most of my bases covered.

I also have a blinding 150 lumens flashlight with my gun, so they would also need to overcome not being able to see.

I keep my gun loaded next to my bed in a digital lock box that can be opened with a 4 digit code... pretty damn fast actually. You should look into them Jason, they are under $100 and they are safe and fast.

If you want to, or are interested in learning something different yet very effective, I'd suggest Krav Maga. I have been learning Krav Maga techniques from a co-worker who is ex force recon. Some of the techniques are down right ruthless.

Never heard of it... I'll have to look into it.

I know that I need to look into doing something again, I'm getting soft in the middle and it drives me nuts.

My confinement officer buddy was telling me a story about one of his fellow officers being at home once. He didn't know his wife had ordered a pizza so when the doorbell rang he grabbed his shotgun, cocked it once, and apparently the driver heard it and it was enough for him. He dropped the shit and b-lined straight for his car. haha

Is this light attached to the gun or is it just one of those mini-HID flashlights?

Also, links to said safe? I need to pick up one for myself as well.

Ive had that happen to me before
I was freakin
and the guy wouldnt leave and the longer he stayed
the more pissed off he got
I took my shotgun and busted one of the little windows out of my door
at about eye level with the barrel and shoved it out to his fore head
and hit it
he froze and before i got to say anything he dropped to the ground and ran off
i never saw him again
had no idea who he was or nothing
