Well this thread has certainly gone downhill over the last few pages :(

Whaddaya reckon...should we give it the chop?

:jk Lighten up peoples....

To sum up....its a matter of CHOICE..I do NOT think it should be banned when performed by a doctor..doesnt mean I agree with it...but..

But...NO ONE has adressed the Rabbi's that do it...and I've been looking believe me...I CANNOT see where or how or when THEY (Jewish bubs) get any sort of pain relief.

A RAbbi is NOT a doctor...can someone enlighten me?

I know NO jewish people, and dont know anyone who does?

No, you did take it the wrong way. It is always possible to misinterpret things, and the way you perceived it was not the intended perception I was aiming for.

How you could possibly have any idea what I perceived or how I "took it"? Unless you are able to read my thoughts from across the globe.

Let me attempt to make it simpler and clearer for you, as that appears necessary.

Your opinion: Parent's shouldn't circumcize babies who are unable to express a choice in the matter

My opinion: The decision is solely that of the parents, and the opinions of others are irrelevant.

Sorry if you found my response "rude" - it was meant to match the tone of one I found rather "rude" and crass: The statement about parents leaving their kids dicks alone.

I'm not sure what has been said.. but I just wanted to add a little side note to it all..

When you're born, you have the circumcision, when you're older, you're never going to even remember ANYTHING about it happening, it's when they age and against their will that it's a bit of a problem. Do it when they're too young to remember and they will thank you when they're older. Not only does it look nicer, it's a lot more hygenic.

That is all :)

well about the Rabbi, it's true that they are not legitimate doctors, but in their defense I'm sure they know this particular operation inside and out as it is a major part of their religion, I could see the operation being resticted to licensed doctors though.

Maybe...but only a doctor (or anaesthetist) can administer an anaesthetic...(over here anyway) and that would include any kind of cream or needle....

Very true, But I don't know whether Rabbi's trained in the operation are given access to anesthetics or not, exceptions could be made for them.

I highly doubt it....but I have been searching to no avail....they explain the technique in great depth...but google the words "jewish circumcision anaesthetic pain relief " etc etc...and I still havent found a link that tells me...

Probably becasue there is none...and they dont want to scare the poor parents that have to be present...

I would love to hear the opinion of someone who has been to a bris and witnessed it first hand...coz I dont know of any NON Jewish parents that would willingly watch their own kid be done...;) pain relief or no

Would only matter if using prescription-strength anesthetics. There are lots of over-the-counter versions that could be used by anyone. I do know that there is some form of topical used in a bris. Don't know the details, but I know from comments from Jewish friends about socializing at the bris while "waiting on the numbing cream"

Just googled it and found an article by a Rabbi (Mohel who performs the ceremony) and he speaks of using Benzocaine and that it's quite common today when a bris is performed.

I am Jewish and my mothers side is also Jewish, all the men in my family have been circumcised and nothing has gone wrong with any of them. There is a lot of hype over something that is not that big of a deal.

"
Circumcision is so important that it may be performed on the Sabbath or a holiday, despite prohibitions of drawing blood on those days. Yet the ceremony may be postponed for health reasons, and then it cannot be performed until seven days after a physician has declared the child healthy. If this occurs, the rite cannot be performed on the Sabbath or holiday, because there is no longer sufficient reason to violate the general law of the holy days.
Circumcision is performed by a mohel, an observant Jew who has been trained in the relevant Jewish law and surgical techniques. (In most traditions, circumcision performed by a physician is not valid even if a rabbi is present, although the Reform movement has begun to accept such circumcisions.)
