My Jewish buddy just got back to me, here was his response:

"It depends on the parents. When I got mine, they just fed me some alcohol, but some people do, and some go au natural. It varies."

In the article I read, the Rabbi said that he often states that the most effective anesthetic for performing a bris is two large glasses of vodka... one for each parent. :D

And I think you should butt the fuck out of what any parent decides for any child that is not your own.

He was giving his opinion. You gave yours, and he gave his about your opinion. Not a very difficult concept.

wow. come on guys, this is a debate! Tangerine's "butt the fuck out" comment was totally uncalled for, and really out of order. Very, very immature debating skills on display.

Retro, it wasn't just an opinion, it was a verbal assault. You don't phrase things like that unless you're reacting emotionally.

Regarding Wikipedia:
Generally people here don't see the value of it because anyone can alter the content. This is true. But erroneous posts do get picked up on. And corrected. Studies have shown wikipedia to be almost as accurate as the major printed encyclopedias.

I've made VERY noticeable edits on Wikipedia that were up for weeks before they were changed back, they're not as on top of things as you think.

But they did get changed. And on the more important articles, the dozens of editors than service each page keep pretty well on top of things. It's good to be a member, because you can check the debates behind each article.

It also really depends on the subject matter. And of course you should only really take note of the pages that are well cited. And then check the citations.

It's a great starting point for info.

As with anything on the interwebs, you've got to double check anything by finding more than one source. Don't dismiss Wikipedia outright, it's bloody handy for quick linking to information.

I've found that for most things I've been looking up on there, the information checks out perfectly against other sources I've found on the web.

anyway, this debate has gone psycho.

I don't think we should ban circumcision. I think we should ban the debating of it.

I'm not saying it's utterly worthless, I'm just saying that it's not to be taken too seriously, and I would not use it as a source in a debate.

This one is a bit more indepth about David Reimer: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sn/tvradio/programmes/horizon/dr_money_prog_summary.shtml

And it has a transcript of the documentry made: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sn/tvradio/programmes/horizon/dr_money_trans.shtml

I will make a warning while I'm at it. I watched the documentry in college and it does contain Brain + David recalling their therapy (as part of David being brought up as a girl, him and his brother had therapy) and the therapy was abusive, quite sexually so at times.
Don't read the transcript if you think it will upset you. I remember some people had to leave the room when the documentry was shown at college becuase they were so uncomfortable with it.

But...NO ONE has adressed the Rabbi's that do it...and I've been looking believe me...I CANNOT see where or how or when THEY (Jewish bubs) get any sort of pain relief.

I read Orthodox ritual circumcision consists of three stages: crushing the foreskin, tearing off the crushed foreskin with a finger-nail, and lastly, using the mouth to suck the blood from the infant's freshly torn penis. This last stage is called metzitzah b'peh. I have no idea how many Jews practice this ritual. If it hasn't been outlawed yet then it would be if I had my say... but then so would infant circumcision. And yes, despite what some have said in this thread, people should speak out when they see an injustice. Unfortunately most don't agree with me that infant circumcision is an injustice. I'm hoping that changes.

It won't most people stick to their guns on this belief and your way of thinking is just narrow minded & a bit misguided. Although i do agree that the Jewish ritual you speak of if it holds any validity is pedophilia.
