I'm not far from your view actually. I think there is a possibility a god exists. But if someone starts assigning attributes to God then I recognize it's wishful thinking. The chances someone can dream up God's attributes and be right are very slim. Yeah, religious people claim it's revelation. But revelation lacks credibility because everyone has their own "revelation". Cultures project their own needs upon their god. If you're a war-like people, guess what? You got a war-like god. If you're in a patriarchal society then your god is male. Not hard to see what's going on there.
I think the probability of an afterlife is even less than the probability of a god. I don't think the probability is zero though. If there is an afterlife then I would guess materialism isn't a very good working hypothesis. When it comes right down to it, none of us really know the nature of our existence with 100% certainty. Who is to say the creators of The Matrix or The Thirteenth Floor couldn't be right. Descartes was wise when he said, "I think, therefore I am."
The above is what's possible. What do I believe? I'm a materialist (i.e. The Matrix is just a movie) and an atheist (i.e. I don't believe there are any gods).
Spiritualism and the afterlife have to do with things that are not material, at least things we can't firmly detect, but sense on a slightly conscious or subliminal level, born of a philosophical and spiritual need to make sense of our existence. Is this a one shot deal or is this an evolution, one of many steps in our journey of existence? We hope for the journey, but the best shot of finally knowing for sure is when we head over the falls.
The only part of evolution that baffles me is... If we evolved from apes, then why are there still apes? Is nature still trying to get it right?
I'm not saying I believe one way or the other, but you do have to question some things. Have we evolved? Yes, of course we have. But from apes? Don't think so.

This is why I don't believe in a soul or an afterlife.
Many branches.

National Geographic Link.Modern humans and Neanderthals: Did they or didn't they? The sordid truth is out, and its not what scientists expected. The closest-ever look at the Neanderthal genome reveals that yes, we did interbreed. But scientists are still fuzzy on the where, the when, and the why.
The interesting discussion that comes out of the National Geo link is that if God did not exercise complete control over the evolutionary process (which it could have) then our development was completely random based on environmental pressure. The fine print of evolution is that species change to adapt but the change does not come first, it is after the fact. The variations that are best suited to survive in an environment, are the ones that do survive and prevail pushing the species forward. I admit that this was a difficult aspect of evolution for me to accept. My thinking was that if it was cold, then you'd grow more hair to deal with it. Animals do develop thicker coats to deal with harsh weather, but the ability is all ready within them. It's not something that they change after being exposed.Scientists have sequenced the genome of the chimpanzee and found that humans are 96 percent similar to the great ape species. "Darwin wasn't just provocative in saying that we descend from the apes—he didn't go far enough," said Frans de Waal, a primate scientist at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. "We are apes in every way, from our long arms and tailless bodies to our habits and temperament."
If you're asking do I have faith in my wife then you're comparing apples and oranges. For starters, I know my wife exists. I know a lot about her. I talk to her and she talks to me on a daily basis. Not so with God. As I said in my post, no one has given me any evidence God exists other than personal anecdotes that can't be verified. It's fine to believe in God if that makes you happy. But finding fault with me for not believing in your god is unreasonable.
Wow, so many people arguing against one person...........
Oh, I think she likes it.
I'm not talking about faith in the fact that she exists doll, I mean faith in the fact that she loves you. How do you explain love?
I feel so so powerful....lol
Do ya think?
You will never know for sure what someone elses emotions are and I doubt anyone would dispute that, what you work off is how they treat you, what they do for you etc. Comparing having faith in someone elses emotions and having faith in someone that you've never seen and no one else in the world has seen, existing are two very different things.
No one else in the world has seen or experienced faith? Really? I beg to differ honey, I think you better do a little more research on the subject. I've seen it, I've felt it and I've experienced it.....and there are millions of others who have as well.
No. That's not what I said, maybe my post wasn't clear enough, I said nobody in the world has ever seen God but they have faith that he exists, which, imo is very different to having faith in an actual person that you know and deal with personally everyday.
