Real Football (Soccer to you Yanks) Thread

Liverpool aren't good enough for the Champions league these days Imagine them against this Barcelona side, or this Real Madird side, or any other great European side. They'd be destroyed. Europa League is about their level truthfully.

True, but they will always put up a better fight than Tottenham.

No offence to Tottenham, but they are short of one truly amazing player.
99% of Liverpool might not be good enough for the top flight, but Gerrard is and always will be a top player and a game winner. We saw tonight the class of Giggs for example.

Yeah true. I also don't think Liverpool players would show the naivety of Crouch going in twice when he knew the risk.

On Spurs's players, I think they are good, but not truly top class. I'd only really bracket Van der Vaart and Modrid as really top class. No, not even Bale. I think Bale's very good, but hasn't shown the true consistency of a really great player.

Let me tell you a secret...

I think Bale is the most over rated player ever. :D

He has had a few good games and we're talking £80 million transfer fees? If Spurs get offered half that they should take it.

I think it's because he's from the UK.

The English media are awful for building up players and making them out to be truly world class. Bale wouldn't even get a trial with Barcelona, let alone play for them properly.

On the consistency thing, earlier this season he played very well against Inter Milan, 3 days later they go to Bolton and Steinsson had him in his pocket for 90 minutes.

Agreed.

He destroyed Maicon, but let's be honest, Maicon is a defender in name only, lol.

Also, on the topic, players will always sign for Liverpool over Tottenham in the meantime.

And it's not because of history as much as tuffdisc might have you believe. It's because in the last 10 years uncountable numbers of players have gone from almost unknown\possible talent to the world stage through Liverpool.

It goes back as far as Rush and McManaman, but also think of Owen, Alonso, Mascherano, Torres... Good liverpool players go onto better clubs, and they know that. So Liverpool will for now always be in a better position to challenge for the Champions league. The realist can tell that Suarez is a great player, but in a few years he'll be moving onto a big european team.

But yet Liverpool have brought in some of the worst "potential world class players" the likes of Alou Diarra, Bruno Cheryou, John-Michael Ferri, Andrej Voronin, Erik Meijer. Heck, both Jorgen Nielsen and Patrice Luzi made millions without playing a competitive match, well Luzi did come on as a subsititue in ONE game when Dudek got injured and Kirkland was injured as well.

Then we've brought in and let go some really good footballers like Craig Bellamy, Peter Crouch, Luis Garcia, Alvaro Arebola and Yossi Benyaoun. For the likes of Voronin and the list in this paragraph you can blame Benitez for selling them and the replacements we got for them haven't been good, except for Voronin's as anyone can replace him!

Nobody in their right mind called those players potential world class.

Take Cheyrou, and average player in the french league? Verses Alonso; best young player in Spain and target of Barca and Madrid.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Alonso only had one sublime season and that was the season before he left. He wanted out because he thought he was better than the club but Rafa told him to stay for one season and prove that he's worth a big transfer, he proved it.

I remember reading months ago that when Cheryou was in France before he came to Liverpool he was touted as the next Zidane, but he wasn't even close.

Alonso had probably a weak second season due to injuries, but his first and third were incredible.

He left because idiot Benitez wanted to replace him with Gareth Barry...

Gareth Barry! For Xabi Alonso? There was the first clue that Rafa had lost the plot.
