So here's my problem with our tax structure...

I get paid $16 an hour ($17 with my night-differential added in). Not exactly poverty, but not rich either. BUT, we work a shit-load of hours. I've had 3 days off this month, and 1 of them was a sick-day not a scheduled day off. My bi-weekly paycheck is usually around 140 hours. Occasionally it will be 160 hours.

Here's the kicker. That 160 hour paycheck comes out to about $20 more than my 140 hour paycheck. Those extra 20 hours kick me into some magical higher tax bracket where I don't get to keep the money! So tell me, what the hell is the incentive for me to work those extra 20 hours, instead of just punching out at 140 and taking a day off? There is none.

Once the government robs you of your incentive to work ($$$), there's a problem.

I don't think the government should tax over-time for hourly employees (or at least it should be at a much lower rate). I don't think I should be punished for going above and beyond what the average worker does.

You've gotta look beyond that one paycheck, dt. Not that I'm supporting the gov't in any way in this. I'm just sayin'.

What kind of withholding do you have? Do you get a refund at the end of the year? If you do, you're loaning your hard-earned dollars to Uncle Sam interest-free. Would good ol' Unc do the same for you?

I understand your view about the tax structure. I would like to see a simplified one and one that is more fair but then look who got us to this point. The same clowns we hope to get us out. They have developed a monster in the IRS that is not going away and the IRS will never allow simplification.

If it is any consolation the wages end up averaging out in the end. So when you file your return it is based on the average. What sucks is they get a bigger piece of the pie at the time you got paid.

I always remember my dad complaining about how they kept adjusting the tax system. If I remember right initially one paid once a year. Then that was not enough so it was every quarter. Then that was not enough so it was every week.

I wonder when they will with the advent of the internet arrive at the point you pay at the end of every day. Seems far fetched yet my industry just was subjected to using an internet based assessment tool before doing certain jobs. We were told this was the fist of this kind in our state and perhaps in the nation. Something where it was mandated to do a job one had to have access to a computer.

Fucking asshats in govt

Re: The Patriot In Exile Club

I changed the title of this thread....To stop any further similarities to Sean Hannity...I get sick of being called a follower of that asshole too.

I was thinking about this post on my long drive home tonight... and you know, the more I thought about it, the more I was offended.
Are you equating conservatives with patriots?
Why would patriots be in exile? Wouldn't that have been in the bush administration?

Holy shit, you're right... and that's why Obama is working towards cutting taxes for the working stiffs like us.

But on a side note, that's because we work on a progressive tax rate... and their shouldn't be that big of a discrepancy in your pay check. They may be taking a higher rate out to make sure you are covered for the year. You will most likely get that difference back at the end of the year. The tax system sucks, they really need to simplify it.

But that does not help you at the time you need and earn the money ;)

Like the others have pointed out, the vaste majority of the difference will be made up on your tax return. But, I still get your bottom line, and I completely agree with you. Which is why I do NOT agree with a progressive tax system. The more you take away the ability to work more to make more money, the less people are going to actually work. And that is a very bad thing.

I agree, that's why I said the tax code needs to be fixed... :)

Do you expect it to though??

I don't

We are too entrenched in it. Too many CPA's and too many bureaucrats period for meaningful change. :(

It should be really simple for a person to file taxes. That time has long passed. There is something wrong with that.

I really hope that this administration addresses the issue. The tax code needs to go away 100% and be rebuilt from the ground up. But you bring up a good point. Can you imagine what would happen to the jobs of tens of thousands of CPA's if this were to happen right now? I would tend to think if it were to happen, it would be after the economy starts to recover. I mean, you wouldn't want to throw all of the CPA's out on the street right now when millions are already losing their jobs.

Don't frown. This is a good thing! :) The more complex the system, the more highly skilled CPA's and bureaucrats that will be needed. Job creation, don't you see!! Those government guys are geniuses. :bates:

No my mentality is shifting more towards the horizon, rather than partisan politics Tim, it's bigger than that.

When I think patriot...I think, nerve, I think independence, I think freedom and outrage.

None of which we exhibit freely in this country anymore. When as a collective do we stand up and see that we are being fleeced? Obama isn't going to "fix" anything, because he's PART of a system that fell down a long time ago.

The whole system needs to be burned to the ground and re-built. When I wake up to find that ACORN is getting a check for 4.1 billion I don't give a fuck who the president is, something needs to be done, that's my point.

All the infighting about "my president is better than yours, neener neener bullshit" the fact is, the whole system is beyond repair, by anyone.

Now what we are going to listen to for the next four years is how much repair we need from the Bush years....And not a fucking thing will get fixed, just excuses. I demand, as a payer of the taxes that contributed to the 800+ fucking BILLION with a B dollars to know where my fucking money is going.....But they won't tell us....It's theirs now, why any need for accountability.

So basically now that Pelosi and the rest of the chicken littles got what they wanted, and Bush is gone, we'll just start giving away money as welfare payments, and a down payment on the next election.

No outrage Tim....None....All anyone can say is "I hope Obama fixes this, or fixes that"

I'm different....I hope the whole system collapses around them..... Our forefathers never would have gotten away with some of this bullshit, and we all know it. People back then would have marched on Washington and cracked heads.

lol, spoken like a true anarchist. You had my weiner erect for a minute there. Then I remembered you aren't one.

But in all seriousness, nice rant. I agree with you but we will differ on what should be done once the system collapses.

How the hell do you know what we differ on? I'm NOT an anarchist, I simply think the system needs to be re-done.

I think it was an expectation of our forefathers to protect ourselves from imminent collapse due to greed and power at the highest levels of government.
