Re: The Conservatives In Exile Club

I have to say that presidents are always woefully undercompensated for some reason... but maybe that's just so people don't try to go for the job for the money.

Clinton was probably the poorest of any recent presidents and he now is a multi millionaire. Becoming president guarantees a cushy rest of your life. Not that I would want the scrutiny and 24/7 protection detail.

True, the retirement package is good. I just think it's wierd that while you're in office, you only get a few hundred grand a year.

I guess you don't really have time to spend much money. :)

Re: The Conservatives In Exile Club

Interesting... now which of those countries use gun control and which ones do not? And what's the percentage of murders compared to the country's entire population?

Cant speak for all of them but two I do know are

USA pop 300,000,000 lax gun control 9,369 gun deaths

United Kingdom pop 60,000,000 strong gun control 14 gun deaths

The US does NOT have lax gun control laws.

The problem is with enforcement of existing laws

For example Washington DC is one of the most heavily regulated cities with gun laws and one of the worst cities as far as crime in this country.
Also there have been a few cities where they virtually required everybody to have guns and the crime rates went down.

In my state they eased the requirements to get a concealed permit. CCW

There were woe is me wailing that it would cause all kinds of problems which never surfaced.

In our case it was a matter of making the requirements uniform state wide. In Detroit it was impossible to get one unless you knew somebody in high places.

Hardly difficult to get guns into Washington though, is it, seeing the rest of the same country dosent have the same laws. All that does is single out Washington as an easy target for criminals with guns because no one else has them, of course its going to act as a magnet for gun crime.

what you just stated is the reason many of us here feel it would be a disaster to make guns illegal here. If that is done then we are at the mercy of criminals.

It does make it more difficult for the criminals though if its harder for them to buy guns too which it does if its harder for anyone to get them. I think its an all or nothing thing though for the reasons I stated above. Of course nothing is going to be perfect but I dont think you can ignore the huge gulf in gun crimes in the stats I quoted. At least it makes it easier for the police. If someone is caught with a gun, you dont have to determine with much difficulty whether or not they mean any harm or not with it. Over here you get a minimum 5 year jail term for carrying a gun around unless you have a damn good reason for it.

Point taken. I guess it's the preference of the nation then, and since the US wrote the constitution specifying that every citizen has the right to bear arms, we're gonna keep it that way.

I can't imagine not having anything to protect myself with if someone forced entry into my house! :eek

If you're unlikely to have anyone break into your home with a gun, a kitchen knife of other household implement does just fine. I once found someone trying to steal my property and belted them round the face with a bike chain, scarring them for life. So glad that there was virtually no chance they were carrying a gun.;):thumbup

Hehe, I'll have to remember to keep a couple bike chains handy then. :p

All I'm saying is, I'm thankful that the gun laws aren't more strict than they already are here in the US. It gives me comfort sleeping with a gun under my bed, and heck, they're fun too. :)

A gun under your bed is likely to do more damage to the owner of it than something else. Just saying. Hey, if you want to live in the wild west, thats your business.;)

Haha, yeah I heard that, and it's sad. Some people are far too careless with weaponry.

I don't own a gun, but I do cherish the freedom I have to buy one if I decide to. I thought I might have to start a collection when Obama was elected, but it looks like he's going to be too busy with other things to bother messing with the 2nd Amendment. Hell, there's a movement here in Texas to re-allow unconcealed carry (wearing a holster on the hip). It's still legal in most states, I believe.

Yeah, saw all that shit on the news showing Americans panic buying guns because Obama won. All I could do was shake my head and say "Oh, dear god" while banging my head on the wall and being grateful I dont live in the US!

I know what you mean. The way these news crews exaggerate things is embarrassing! ;)

There's nothing wrong with responsible gun ownership. Parka, you of all people should know that the English ruled the globe with an iron fist for about a billion years, and committed some of the most grotesque crimes against humanity in so doing, now a vast majority turn the nose up at us, like we are the cavemen.

Just an observation
