A defendant can be a witness on their own behalf, yes. But a "witness" to a crime is generally accepted to be a third party not directly involved. You seem to have a bizarre obsession with Jesse Jackson now as well... it's somewhat disturbing.

If ever we needed an example of a debater who lacks the corage to admit to himself that he is beaten and is frantically looking for a lifeline, however irrelevant, this would be it.

Zimmerman had no cause to get out of his SUV. Because he chose to disregard his training and the advice of the dispatcher, he ended up killing someone. The court will decide if it was incompetence or malice. And his testimony as a defendant will be treated differently than that of a witness, because the witnesses have no incentive to cover his sorry ass.
