Profiling of any kind is good.
It's how the FBI identifies all manner of evil within our society.
We all use profiling to protect ourselves and our families.
Don't be swayed by adverbs.
Profiling saves lives.
Correlation is not causation. A kid wearing fat guys' pants and his baseball cap on sideways is not necessarily a drive-by killer. A woman with four loud preschool kids and a huge purse is not necessarily a shoplifter. A dark-skinned man with a plaid shirt and straw cowboy hat is not necessarily an illegal alien.

You're wrong that profiling of any kind is good. It must be applied with a liberal amount of wisdom and common sense. And while some profiling saves lives, profiling more often promotes harassment and squelches liberty.

There's a reason the issue is purposely not being resolved. We're friends with Mexico and Canada. There's no good reason not to open the land borders. Employment problems can be controlled through tax incentives, such as paying US and Mexico payroll taxes or something. How's it done in Europe? Does France have a problem with Spaniards sneaking across the border to pick grapes?
Bumping this because I really want an answer.

My impression s that you just can't go up to Canada and get a job without the proper papers. What is the process? I don't know. Do they have a problem with illegal aliens working there? Maybe a Canadian will let us know. :)

Contrary to what they would prefer, Canadians aren't in Europe :dunno

You'd have to realise that Europe is made up of many different countries with vastly different governments first.;)
Of course I realize that, which means you don't know the question. :spank:

How do the different countries on your mainland handle immigration & border crossings?

Well its all change in our election so it waits to be seen. However the Conservatives want a cap on it as well as cutting down on red tape. The Libs who we're in a coalition with though basically want a free for all. On top of that, the French like to turn a blind eye to them escaping across the channel and through the tunnel to Britain so "wait and see" is the realistic answer I can give you right now.;)

how about what it is like today?

not what it might be in the future

They get over here easily (thanks to the French). Then they sit around for months on end waiting to be processed. In the meantime they cant work and Eastern European gangs recruit them as prostitutes or pick pockets. In the mean time, Gordon Brown, our outgoing PM describes anyone who has issues with this as bigots, thus giving Nazi extremists like the BNP more popularity.(

Again, I'm asking about the mainland. Between Spain & France, Germany & Poland, Italy & Austria, where people can walk across like they do here at the US/Mexico border. Is it allowed freely? Do they have a fence and/or guards all along the border? That kind of thing.

So what? Canada is a country that does not appear to have a problem with illegal aliens. Aliens will go anywhere they can get a job.
Of course we have problems with them. We just don't have as much of a problem as you because the Mexican border is closer to you. Beside that, we don't dwell on it as much. To you guys it's become a national obsession.

Process? You apply for a job and if you get lucky you get it. I've been working for almost 42 years and have been asked for ID ( SIN ) only once and that was back in the early 70's. The guy wanted to make sure I wasn't a draft dodger from the US.

to the best of my knowledge you need a visa to work, irrespective of your nationality, not all though need a visa to visit as a tourist, we have a list of countries like this, even then the Canadian Customs official can refuse entry of there is suspicion that said tourist is going to to try and outssya their welcome

most of our issues arise from political refugees not economic ones, i.e. being an unenmployed Mexican wont get you in but if you are fleeing a civil war, say in Somalia you have a right to a hearing, if we beleive you have a reasonable fear to return

porter he was quizzing Canadians to see if we have problems with illegal aliens and the comment you made pertains to the documented ones. Two different issues.

thanks - i think we welcome cheap labour in many areas so i would hazard a guess that many employers care not about papers
