Is Chivlarly dead?

Chivalry[1] is a term related to the medieval institution of knighthood which has an aristocratic military origin of individual training and service to others. It is usually associated with ideals of knightly virtues, honor and courtly love: "the source of the chivalrous idea," remarked Johan Huizinga, who devoted several chapters of The Waning of the Middle Ages to chivalry and its effects on the medieval character, "is pride aspiring to beauty, and formalized pride gives rise to a conception of honour, which is the pole of noble life."[2] The word is derived from the French word "chevalerie", itself derived from "chevalier", which means knight, derived from "cheval", horse (indicating one who rides a horse).
The age of Chivalry is gone, but today the terms chivalry and chivalrous are still sometimes used to describe courteous behavior of men towards women.

Yeah it's from Wiki, I don't give a crap...

The point is, it came from ages ago, so now it's been built into society like some kind of custom, so men just do it anyway. Remember that ages ago when it all began, women were much more disadvantaged, so it was only fair they got treated 'chivalrously' right? ;)

And to add to that, strictly speaking it is only usually a thing men do for women. Yes women can do it but that's not really 'chivalry' as such, because if a woman did it for a man it doesn't fit the definition of chivalry - 'men doing courteous behaviour for women' or whatever. Maybe nowadays women do that for men, but it's not like women open car doors for men, or pull out their chair, carry their luggage, etc.

I don't mind a little bit of chivalry, but I'm the type of girl in which I hate people doing things for me too much, it's like saying I'm incapable of doing everything I normally do anyway, chivalry is only good if it's really needed. In some parts it's dead, some parts it's not. Depends on the way the guy was raised.

I'm a very independant individual, but I must admit to absolutely adoring when a man opens a door for me or when he places his hand on the small of my back to lead me to our seats in a restaurant or a movie.....I think that the secret to understanding and knowing who we really are in this world is being able to rule it as women...while holding on to our right to be feminine.

Kimmy like you I don't think a man should just do everything for a women, that as Mazzy-wazzy in his infinite wisdom pointed out is Chauvinistic and silly, I do believe though that women should be treated with respect, I hope you know the difference between respect and pity, unlike someone else in this thread.

Kimmy, thanks but that is an old definition when equal rights weren't there genders. I think it doesn't apply to
genders in this 21st century when men and women are EQUAL!
Why then one gender should try to show PITY for the other???:)

Lol yes I don't think chivalry is showing pity for someone, it's just a custom and it's a nice thing to do and it's manners. Wouldn't it feel rude to not hold a door open for a lady and swing it back in her face? (Unless you hate her lol).
