Who said I feel bad for them? I don't. They committed a crime, and now they need to be served justice. I just don't like how most of you want to treat them like they were in gulags. Prisoners need to serve their time, but they shouldn't be treated like inhumane garbage.
I never said treat them like inhuman garbage, I said strop treating them like spoiled children. All they need to survive is 3 meals a day, health care, a place to sleep and adequate protection from those around them. Bottom line.
I want to make you people see that cable and stuff like that isn't some sort of thing that replaces their freedom. Losing your freedom is a incredible punishment.
Their freedom was taken away for a good damn reason. When are YOU going to see THAT?
Oh, I'm not denying that they shouldn't be dealt with accordingly, I just think that REAL THREATS like serial killers, rapists, gang bangers and so on are the ones who should be put away for a good while and be kept away from the public. White collar crime needs to be dealt with swiftly and justly. I just don't think putting them away and crowding our prisons up with non-violent people is worth our time. Make them work for their punishment somewhere, perhaps at a blue collar factory or something where all of their paycheck goes to some sort of charity, that would be pretty hilarious. Well, after they serve time in some sort of punishment facility and relay every cent they stole.
Rehab centers are HIGHLY ineffective and WAY more expensive than prisons. Sure, go ahead, spend another 100K on the asshole that didn't pay his taxes for 30 years AND stole money from the company he's running. :smiley24:
People who are not violent should be served justice differently. See, I have a different idea of what prison is. I think prison is for people that are a PHYSICAL harm to society, which would include murderers, child molesters, rapists and so on.
I personally don't think people who are caught with substances that are punishable by law should be sent to jail, rather rehab.
Once again, rehab had about a 90% fail rate. Wasted money.
Thats bogus jargon IMO... If you weren't involved in the events leading up and causing that persons death then he wouldn't be dead. No matter if you mean't to kill him or not... killing is killing.
Straight out of my book from the Academy.....
MANSLAUGHTER - The unlawful killing of a human being without malice or premeditation, either express or implied; distinguished from murder, which requires malicious intent.
The distinctions between manslaughter and murder, consists in the following: In the former, though the act which occasions the death be unlawful, or likely to be attended with bodily mischief, yet the malice, either express or implied, which is the very essence of murder, is presumed to be wanting in manslaughter.
It also differs from murder in this, that there can be no accessaries before the fact, there having been no time for premeditation. Manslaugbter is voluntary, when it happens upon a sudden heat; or involuntary, when it takes place in the commission of some unlawful act.
The cases of manslaughter may be classed as follows those which take place in consequence of: 1. Provocation. 2. Mutual combat. 3. Resistance to public officers, etc. 4. Killing in the prosecution of an unlawful or wanton act. 5. Killing in the prosecution of a lawful act, improperly performed, or performed without lawful authority.
The provocation which reduces the killing from murder to manslaughter is an answer to the presumption of malice which the law raises in every case of homicide; it is therefore no answer when express malice is proved and to be available the provocation must have been reasonable and recent, for no words or slight provocation will be sufficient, and if the party has had time to cool, malice will be inferred.
In cases of mutual combat, it is generally manslaughter only when one of the parties is killed. When death ensues from duelling the rule is different, and such killing is murder.
The killing of an officer by resistance to him while acting under lawful authority is murder; but if the officer be acting under a void or illegal authority, or out of his jurisdiction, the killing is manslaughter, or excusable homicide, according to the circumstances of the case.
Killing a person while doing an act of mere wantonness, is manslaughter as, if a person throws down stones in a coal-pit, by which a man is killed, although the offender was only a trespasser.
When death ensues from the performance of a lawful act, it may, in consequence of the negligence of the offender, amount to manslaughter. For instance, if the death has been occasioned by negligent driving. Again, when death ensues, from the gross negligence of a medical or surgical practitioner, it is manslaughter.
I DO see THAT. No shit? I know the severity of what they have done, but its like some of you act like them having cable is some sort of extravigant thing that seems to make their stay at PRISON a overnight stay at the Hilton. It doesn't do that.I never said treat them like inhuman garbage, I said strop treating them like spoiled children. Rehab has been effective in a lot of cases, actually. The ineffective ones were not run properly. When prisoners leave prison, they should be BETTER OFF than when they entered. That will make them less likely (in most cases) to reoffend and end up in jail again. This is PREMPTIVE thinking.

No one said that having cable makes their stay like the Hilton, you're twisting words to fit your argument. I was saying that cable is not a necessity. Just like all the other expensive shit they get. I'm not against them having television. Nor am I against them having hobbies. I am against paying out of my pocket for them to have BETTER things than most people out here get.
I know its not a necessity, but who cares? They need something to keep them sane. Although, maybe they should just have basic channels/educational channels and books instead. No one said that having cable makes their stay like the Hilton, you're twisting words to fit your argument. Thats a good thing, but I wonder how good the quality of the housing is?And as far as the preemptive thinking....most prisons offer information on crossover housing for inmates when they leave prison, but the state cannot FORCE the inmates to participate. The housing is free, as long as the inmate abides by the rules of the house and agrees to counseling while he/she is there.
.....Oh, and people don't get buggered in the showers!
Where do they get buggered then?.....Or don't they?
Well I don't know about your prisons, they sound easier than ours from what Boxer tells me. The difference between our prisons and the way they are portrayed on telly though I would say - in real life they are much more boring and inmates are locked up and having a lot less recreation than shown on telly. They are also less violent. Your average inmate just wants to get his head down and do his time. There is violence but it is more brutal and more selective but a lot less common than shown on telly. Oh, and people don't get buggered in the showers!
They only get buggered in the non literal sense!
So it's a non-buggering prison? Strange. How are they able to control that?
Thats a good thing, but I wonder how good the quality of the housing is?
The quality is better than it should be. My step-mother is a counselor in one of these houses, and it's absolutely beautiful. We're talking an $200,000 house here, and there are only 10 "converters" living in the house at any given time. Not exactly slum houses.
They should just have small apartments....why they have $200,000 homes confuses me.The quality is better than it should be. This is only an opinion...
What they need:
Food, Hydration, Exercise and rest.
What they really need:
A program that will identify what it is about them that leans them towards crime, counseling to show them they they can become productive and respected and job training to give them some type of skills in the free world.
Here is what we basically have now:
The strong dominate the weak, they steal, kill and lie, abuse drugs and drink.....Just like on the streets. With only one major difference, they will still get fed and have shelter regardless of the choices they make.
Prison doesn't teach anything, it helps the folks hone skills and gain weight for the next round out.
