Wrong. WRONG on so many levels. So you think that if a man goes and robs a bank in the middle of the night, NON-VIOLENTLY, he shouldn't have to go to prison?? Are you KIDDING? There is STILL a set amount of money being spent PER INMATE a year....lessening the number of inmates doesn't change that!
I would categorize all theft cases as violent.

I'm talking more about people who cheat on their taxes, get caught with pot etc etc

A crime is a crime is it not? And people who cheat on their taxes, unless it's over a certain amount of money, do not normally go to prison. Getting caught with drugs is a serious crime IMO. First offenders do not normally go to prison either. And even second and third offenders normally get suspended sentences or probation.

Yes, crime is crime, but all crimes are not equal in nature.

Oh please, a 18 year old kid who smokes a little pot isn't engaging in a serious crime. Its mind blowing that pot is even illegal.

That 18 year old kid smoking pot isn't going to go to prison either dear. If he got caught, more than likely the cop would take it away from him and send him on his way OR the judge would give him some bullshit community service or unsupervised probation and send him on his way. It's the repeat offenders that they send to jail, for only a few days at first, then as the offenses are repeated time is added on.

Actually he could if he is caught with a certain amount in some states.

If he's caught with a certain amount it's considered Possession with Intent to Sell. HOWEVER, for a first offense, again, he'll likely be put on probation. Unless of course he's running a drug ring, then he deserves jail time.

Yeah, each case is different. Thats why I don't like mandatory sentencing times that are generalized and thrown around for differencing severities of a single crime.

AEF you think the way to control crowding in prisons is to make some illegal things legal? Like drugs? Pot, I can see. That shouldn't be illegal, I agree. However, other drugs are illegal for good reason. Overcrowding comes full circle when you have people that don't mind going to prison because of how much they get while they are there. :) See how it all connects?

There's really no such thing as mandatory sentencing times. A judge can overrule any sentence if he so chooses. Those times are more like guidelines.

Some yes, others no. Some crimes should just not be punishable by prison IMO.

I've played around with the idea of legalizing most drugs. I'm still on the fence though. Some countries have done it and they have some of the lowest drug use on the planet, but America is totally different in culture, so idk yet.

Some laws in America I disagree with totally. Some are put in place for peoples protection. However, just because I disagree with some laws doesn't mean that I won't arrest someone for breaking them. Everything in its place yanno?

I know, but its not just because I disagree with them, they are generally accepted as unnecessary.

My main point in making this thread is trying to find out just how "pampered" we feel inmates should be. Those of you here that have never worked in an environment with prisoners or around law enforcement find it hard to understand where a lot of the frustration comes from with law enforcement. You put your life on the line to catch someone that has murdered another person, and when it's all said and done he ends up first in a county jail where he can be kept for up to 5 YEARS before his trial, then he's sentenced to life in prison where he can lay around, not work, watch TV all day long, eat up food that YOU pay for, is afforded luxuries that some hard-working people can't even afford for themselves, and just generally have a better life than most of us out here!! It's disheartening and frustrating!

Well I also know what it's like, having been a prisoner but I honestly can't say it's this pampered life you describe, from my experience, I guess British jails just must be a lot harder that American prisons.

American prisons are a joke. The inmates have so many "rights" that it's nearly impossible for the officers there to keep order! If you touch an inmate, try to punish him for breaking the rules or any other host of stupid things, you have lawyers and the inmates families up your ass screaming about lawsuits!

I was just wondering, is it compulsory for inmates to work in America? Over here it's compulsory for them to work full time. If they refuse they have their telly taken away and are put in solitary confinement.

No, it's not required. They have the option to get a job in prison, but they aren't required to work. Unless they are in a minimum security work camp. Then they have to work.
