Inmates: Rights or Privileges

My main point in making this thread is trying to find out just how "pampered" we feel inmates should be. Those of you here that have never worked in an environment with prisoners or around law enforcement find it hard to understand where a lot of the frustration comes from with law enforcement. You put your life on the line to catch someone that has murdered another person, and when it's all said and done he ends up first in a county jail where he can be kept for up to 5 YEARS before his trial, then he's sentenced to life in prison where he can lay around, not work, watch TV all day long, eat up food that YOU pay for, is afforded luxuries that some hard-working people can't even afford for themselves, and just generally have a better life than most of us out here!! It's disheartening and frustrating!
like those things make up for having your freedom being taken away.

Their freedom was taken away because of the crime they committed!! Jesus, you act like these poor inmates are so unfairly persecuted! If it was someone in YOUR family they brutally murdered, or robbed, you'd be screaming for justice!

LOL!! Well I wouldn't go THAT far, but a little stiffer punishment for certain crimes would be great. It might start deterring people from doing certain things. Although, you'll still have that small percentage of stupid assholes that will still continue to commit crimes with flagrant disregard for anyone but themselves.

I don't think they should have any of the luxuries, they knew what they were doing.. They're in jail, they can't expect to live a good life in there..

When people commit crimes they think, oh shit, I could go to jail, but most of them don't care because they get this life where they get to use cable and see family and friends every day..

They shouldn't have the luxury of cable, good food, good beds, good clothes.. It's their own fault..

What about the people living in poverty, I'm pretty sure that they deserve a bit more then a box to sleep in... People in poverty would probably enjoy going to jail because of this reason, they'd get food and would live a "better" life..

Our money could be spent on something more useful.

Manslaughter is TECHNICALLY an accidental crime, however, the person convicted did something to DIRECTLY cause the persons death....hence why they are punished for it. IE: A drunken driver wrecking and killing his passenger...

Want to lessen that much money being spent? Don't send non-violent offenders to jail.

I'm talking more about people who cheat on their taxes, get caught with pot etc etc

Fair enough for petty crime. But what about high profile white collar crime?....Corporate executives fleecing millions of dollars from corporate business and stakeholders? What makes them less culpable than the regular man? Don't you think they should do the time?

LOL .. so what exactly are you supposed to do to people who rob and sell drugs (neither being violent crimes) if not send them to jail .. give them a lollipop and send them home with a note to get signed by their parents?

They are less culpable, they just aren't a direct and violent threat to the public like murderers and so are. Now, they should be punished, but I think in a different, creative way.

I consider robbery as violence.

Jails shouldn't be gulags. They should have good bare necessities.

Who said I feel bad for them? I don't. They committed a crime, and now they need to be served justice. I just don't like how most of you want to treat them like they were in gulags. Prisoners need to serve their time, but they shouldn't be treated like inhumane garbage.

and lol at the appeal to emotions. Those don't work.

I want to make you people see that cable and stuff like that isn't some sort of thing that replaces their freedom. Losing your freedom is a incredible punishment.

You got to be kidding. They are culpable enough to spend time in prison. Why do you think they try to fight against going to prison as they do? Because it's the one thing that really gets to them. Financial penalties they can deal with ok but no they don't like the prospect of doing time.

And yes, you better believe that when by fleecing millions of dollars from the very corporations that ordinary citizens some of which have invested life savings toward a nest egg to secure their future and/or retirement, they cause companies to go into bankruptcy or the like and cause said people to lose their invested money or for that matter employees of said company that they do need to suffer the consequences. I'm sure you could think of a couple companies that suffered as a result of such actions.

Perhaps they deserve an incredible punishment yes?....oh and I'm sure they would get "cable and stuff".

So what exactly do you think is not a jailable offence?

Almost every crime out there is causing harm to someone .. which could be considered as violence (if you consider robbing someone's house while they aren't home, or stealing their car as violent) in some way or another .. violene = harm = a crime in most cases.

Oh, I'm not denying that they shouldn't be dealt with accordingly, I just think that REAL THREATS like serial killers, rapists, gang bangers and so on are the ones who should be put away for a good while and be kept away from the public. White collar crime needs to be dealt with swiftly and justly. I just don't think putting them away and crowding our prisons up with non-violent people is worth our time. Make them work for their punishment somewhere, perhaps at a blue collar factory or something where all of their paycheck goes to some sort of charity, that would be pretty hilarious. Well, after they serve time in some sort of punishment facility and relay every cent they stole.

1. Food.
2. Water
3. Shelter
4. 1 visitor per week (not counting a lawyer)

true...
aside from living in a cell alotta inmates live better than the impoverished people in this country who hafta dig out of friggen garbage cans. The government needs to take alotta that money and help the needy more than sum punk who was stupid enough to be put there in the first place.

People who are not violent should be served justice differently. See, I have a different idea of what prison is. I think prison is for people that are a PHYSICAL harm to society, which would include murderers, child molesters, rapists and so on.

I personally don't think people who are caught with substances that are punishable by law should be sent to jail, rather rehab.

So what happens when they keep getting caught over and over then? Rehab costs twice as much as prison does .. to house and treat these fucks.

And the majoirty of them DON'T WANT to stop .. they like drugs, rehab is a waste of time and money and effort for those people.
