I got to thinking about this a bit more.

Your comparison is very very vague and isn't at all like Hillary's idea.

You give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish; he eats for life.

Giving our children the skills & education needed to succeed and be productive members of society is nothing like that of giving them a HS diploma and then shoving them into the minimum wage work force to fight to survive for every penny they can scrape together.

But, like I said earlier, if EVERYONE has a college degree, then a college degree would be the same as the HS diploma is now. Then you'll have college-educated minimum wage workers.

Does it bother you that some people have to be below others for this world to work? I think we may need to find a different way of going about things.

It bothers me if it's decided by how much money they were born into. Education and opportunity should be equally available to all regardless of how much they can afford.

Why should we care about money? We are the only ones that give it its value. What would happen if we stopped believing it had value?:ninja

Which is why we need more college education. There's too much minimum wage workers, too much demand for higher paid degree driven jobs because nobody has a degree.

Think about it.

If more people were available for the degree-driven jobs, the wages for the job would go DOWN.

If less people were available for the unskilled labor, the wages would go UP.

It's supply and demand.

Well, if more jobs were created that wouldn't be a problem.

Depending on the degree required position here, there is a high demand for qualified people, and a low supply of qualified people.

Not everyone is going to want college, but is better suited for unskilled labor jobs, those people will fill those positions. People qualified for 'unskilled' labor are abundant.

We can't even fill the higher paying jobs we have now. It'll take at least 2 generations before your scenario even remotely begins to take effect.

I don't see how anyone could be against more Americans furthering their education. There is nothing but good that will come from it. We won't have less people to do the "crap" jobs where a higher education isn't needed, because no matter what plan you put into effect, there will be people who will not go, people that won't do well in school.
The $5,000 bond will not guarantee everyone an education, actually I would doubt that it would raise the percentage by very many percentage points. What I do see it doing is helping those who do go stay further out of debt. It would be a great jump start. But wasn't there talk of it also being available as a down payment on your first home?

This may not be a great plan, but I sure would love to see something in place to invest in our future. And that's exactly what this is, investing in all of our futures. That $20 billion spent today could turn into a much greater return for all of us later.
There is also the point of what it will do for our economy today. That $20 billion would be invested in todays market, and another $20 billion the following year. That's a hell of a lot of cash being pumped into the economy. That works to help all of us. :dunno
