And, you chemical buffs, there is a difference between what is produced with a welding rod, and Thermite that is created for purpose.
I think you might need to go back and do some research on what steel beams are welded with.....Just a suggestion. And if whomever built the towers is reputable there is a dossier of materials sheets up to and including the rods that were used to weld the beams with. In my industry, that is documentation that follows the construction around for the entirety of its life.
Welding filler/material, temperatures etc. play a huge part in what is used for an investigation after a failure. Residue left behind by welding rods is minimal, and of the welds were buffed then it's practically non-existent.
And the residue left behind isn't combustible anyhow.
