Re: Bill Gates Says He Dosen't Pay Enough Tax

I think less than 5 people in USA could pay of all the debt there is within 5 min and in one go without even missing it on there account.

Wrong......the entire wealth of the Forbes 400 list is less than the 2011 Federal deficit.
And the Federal Debt is considerably more.

Think we need about 400 to cover 10...if we take it all that would cover 70 % :willy_nilly:

Re: Bill Gates Says He Dosen't Pay Enough Tax

I'm not okay with gov't subsidizing corporations - any corporations.

Agree

I'm not okay with charging different tax rates on different income. (I'm not okay with federal income tax at all, but let's not go there)

Disagree. 50% of Americans earn less than $35,000 per year. Taxing them at the same rate as someone who earns $350,000 per year is morally wrong. You think the rich and corporation are hoarding money now? Let them keep even more of their money and and even less will trickle down into the economy at large. "Suppy Side" has failed with ever reducing progressive taxation. Why do you keep thinking that by reducing taxation on the wealthiest even more this situation will somehow reverse itself?

I'm not okay with demonizing people for becoming rich without breaking the law.

Asking people who earn 100 times the average American worker to pay taxes in proportion to how much they have benefitted from our collective American infrastructure is not "demonizing" them. It is a reasonable request.

I'm not okay with legislators passing laws to unfairly benefit campaign contributors over their competition.

Agree.

I'm not okay with Washington operating outside their strict constitutional limits.

Unrestrained Capitalism mainly benefits 1% of the population. Using the constitution the way the Ron Pauls of the nation interpret it will only serve to further enrich the top 1% and harm the rest of us in the long run. A common sense approach is required. Australia is getting it right. We need to do the same.

I'm not okay with collecting federal income tax only to redistribute it to states, especially since the purpose is to dictate and control State gov't operations from Washington.

We are one nation, not a collection of 50 different countries. There has to be some cohesion. Most states have demonstrated they do a poor job of governing themselves without federal oversight. Think of the south and Jim Crowe laws, and states like Nevada and environmental compliance. Local politicians can be bought off much cheaper than federal politicians.

If all of these things were fixed, Washington would have excess revenue, be able to pay off debts quickly, and we would all enjoy more freedom.

If some of those things were fixed it would help, but other of those ideas would make the situation exponentionally worse.

You'd need all 400 on the Forbes and a couple more list to cover the Federal deficit.
To cover the Federal debt, the above and probably the majority of millionaires and much of the middle class.

Stone - could you post figures and sources to support that claim?

I disagree. By extension then we should set prices based on income. Charge one person $5 for a bicycle, another person $5K for the same bike. We have personal exemptions. That's moral enough.

You think the rich and corporation are hoarding money now? Let them keep even more of their money and and even less will trickle down into the economy at large. Taxation wouldn't be reduced and the rich wouldn't be keeping more of their money. Raise capital gains rates to regular income.

But you don't stop at the request, regardless of its "reasonableness." I think demonizing is a fair characterization.

:thumbup

I agree. American capitalism is unrestrained because legislation takes away the natural restraints of the free market. That 1% benefits primarily from the favors they buy from legislators. Using the constitution the way the Ron Pauls of the nation interpret it will restore the very harsh regulations that the free market provides. The 1% will have to take risk into account and face real failure should their gambles not pay off. The 1% would be "hurt" more than anyone else, and the rest of us would benefit greatly in the long run. This approach is common sense and honors the principles of individual liberty, individual responsibility, and individual determination that our country originally espoused.

We are one nation, not a collection of 50 different countries. There has to be some cohesion. Most states have demonstrated they do a poor job of governing themselves without federal oversight. We are indeed one nation - of a collection of 50 sovereign States. People today seem to think that the definition of "state" is "really big county." There is cohesion and can be cohesion without Washington bribery or coercion, especially to the extraconstitutional degree that Washington practices today. It's really laughable to think that sitting in an office in Washington instills a person with a degree of wisdom that sitting in an office in Okahoma City does not. Centralizing power and control is nearly always a bad idea. I could address how each of your examples can be addressed, but we're convoluted enough already.

If some of those things were fixed it would help, but other of those ideas would make the situation exponentionally worse.
Then let's fight together to fix those things we agree on before fighting over those we don't.
