And yet, even knowing that, I do think it's possible to be religious, sometimes even helpful. For me it is, anyway. I think Christianity at its core, at its beginning sought to free the Jews from the strangulation of excessive legalism in the religion, but was twisted around to a power scheme fairly early on in its life. I think Buddhism, too, comes fairly close to that meme, save for the twisting part.

WAAAY back to the OP, bypassing those intentionally trying to derail the thread, especially some who share an IP address.

There's another possibility not considered in any of these posts: What if there is a higher intelligence to the universe that underlies it but has little or nothing to do with us, and it won't be in a hundred, or a thousand, or until another asteroid smacks the planet (assuming humanity is still around and survives it) before we discover it? That is, what of it we can comprehend, which even then wouldn't be much?

I think what is currently dying is the notion of a transactional God, though there are still many holdouts to that notion. I'd welcome the death knell of the notion that someone is blessed for good things happening and cursed if afflicted with disease, likewise notions of heaven and hell. I hope by a hundred years hence they'll be completely dead.

I am open to that possibility. Billions of years of an expanding universe has to have produced more than Jerry Springer.

That's the trouble with anything that gives people the opportunity to control people, there will always be people who will abuse it for their own gains and power

I would hope so, I think this kind of thing mocks our intelligence. If I do x, god rewards me. If I do y, god punishes me. Well clearly, unless one plays Calvinball and mentions unknowable punishments in the unknowable afterlife, this formula doesn't work here on earth. Probably time to move a bit beyond god as an ATM.

It's not difficult to mock your intelligence, or lack of that is.

I have found Pan to be pretty damned smart and thought provoking in her posts. You on the other hand? Not so much.

That means you and Pancreas are peas in a pod and both clueless. I've been reading alot of the nonsense around here and it seems to me to be a bunch of christian bashing and very little provoking of thought going on.

Hm. I'm a Christian. Does that mean I can bash a few Christians? Seems like that's been par for the course for the religion for centuries.

But I'd really prefer to just say that Christianity even as it was known a hundred years ago is dead, as will what we know of it a hundred years from now. But I doubt the religion itself will be.

Oh, darn, we're back on topic.

Just don't fall into the trap of equating all those who question as bashers. On the surface they might appear very similar, but to me bashing is the move from legitimate questions into the ridiculing mode.

Please point out where I have bashed anyone regarding their beliefs or as a counterpoint to something they genuinely put out here. Calling someone a fucking idiot, because they happen to be a fucking idiot does not count. You fucking idiot. I have not seen any christian bashing, Jew bashing, Kwanzaa, or other bashing here. You have something to add, then do so.

Your mamma told me if you don't have anything nice to say about someone you should keep your mouth shut. Or at least that is what I think she was saying, because her mouth was full at the time.

Those are some very damaging and libelous statements to make. I can't believe this forum would tolerate such posts against someone.

In order for something to be libelous it must first be shown to not be true. Your inability to discern the difference between panacea and pancreas would imply, that at the least, you have a reading comprehension problem. Whether or not you meet the medical definition of idiot can only be determined by further testing.

In order for it to be damaging, or libelous, it must be shown to cause harm. As you are an anonymous internet personality named "pablo" it would seem that you could not suffer "harm" as defined by law. Therefore, I hold true that my comments are factual, as evidenced by your poor reading comprehension.

That being said. You can always report me to Darrell as you have done. He has an obligation to uphold the rules, and protect those that lack the mental capacity to protect themselves.

I also take exception to you calling both Pan and I clueless. You will note, that I did not report this highly defamatory remark to anyone, unlike you.

Darrell - I'm glad you were my first....xoxox...

You obviously aren't familiar with liability. This is a fairly fine line and you seem to have crossed it. Sure it could be argued that those kinds of statements cause no harm but some people I have talked to see it differently.

oooooh......now I am worried. You have spoken to people. Are you feeling harmed? Do you need a hug? Did the people you spoke with s p e a k r e a l s l o w so you could understand? I bet this forum would be easier for you if it had more pictures.

The only thing I am upset about, is I have allowed you to bring me down to your level and respond to your bait. Shame on me. I will be a good boy and stop now. My apologies to the admins.

Why don't you respond to the point of the OP.

Will the expansion of science and knowledge over the next 100 or so years "kill" god?

From Darwin to Einstein to Hawking, advances in science and a deeper understanding of our natural world has challenged the ideology behind the god created man principle. Genesis. The Big Bang, black holes, string theory, quantum mechanics. Is the paradigm of god challenged in one fashion or another by all of these things?

As we continue to add to our knowledge, will there be a fulcrum, in which the balance is tilted in the other direction?

Will god die by the hand of a more educated man?

Yes?
No?

Why....

I think 100 years is being to short sighted.

The real question IMO is will mankind even be around in the next couple hundred of years or will our own technology kill us?

Don't get me wrong, science has improved our lives by leaps and bounds, but man being man, we seem to have an inherant destructive nature, and added with technology, well, I'm just wondering if man will create his own flood without God's help the next time.

It intrigues me how there's such a stink about the 1% vs. the 99% in the US, when to a great proportion of the rest of the planet the US is the 1%, as far as consumption of resources, etc. I foresee a great many upheavals around the world, not just in the US. But I don't see the species dying completely. I think that these things are simply a natural development, and I really do think our philosophy is matching our technological developments, we just don't see it because we don't have the perspective to. It is evolving, though. And I do think that our views about God will change; they already have. But I think those views will have to get us to realize the disparities the people of the planet have, and they'll have to change to ensure our survival. With want there is a tendency toward fundamentalism, and with plenty toward arrogance, though I grant that I'm generalizing with that statement.
