Warrantless wiretapping in place before 9/11

Should the Government be able to do this without warrants?

Over and over you hear the President say he needs warrantless wiretapping to protect us from Terrorists, that it's a more dangerous world since 9/11.
Then can someone please explain why the large telecom companies were asked to put a program in place to listen in on Americans 6 months before 9/11. That was a month after Bush took office.

Now one has to ask the simple question... if these programs are in place to "protect" Americans from terrorist attacks, then why did 9/11 happen? I mean the programs were in place 6 months before the attack.

Here is a link just for you Donnie... It's from FOX :)

The thread is now a poll. I wanted to see how people felt about this situation and if they were ok with it or not...

I had thought about it... but I figured that people would discuss their choices anyway.

I chose NO. I think it's much more important to uphold the constitution and keep our system of checks and balances in place.

Our nation is built on a foundation of laws and the threat of terrorism doesn't mean that we can just chuck them out the window.
The terrorists of this world are NOT capable of destroying the US, yet we act like it's the biggest threat we ever faced as a nation.
Does anyone remember the cold war where Russia had thousands of nuclear missiles pointed at us and we could be vaporized in under 45 minutes? Well there was no need to throw out the constitution then... why now?

Well I'm sorry if you don't take your freedoms that thousands died over seriously.

Us discovering that it has been going on for a while now only should strengthen out resolve against it in order to uphold liberty.

Oh, I do. And I know that our government and military provide that very freedom in ways that I probably don't want to know about, AEF.

I question the gov't. I think that Bush is an idiot.

I also believe Black Ops and government surveillance are necessary evils to the cloak of freedom that you like to mock.

quit being whiners. It's been going on forever. We're just now finding out about it.

They know everything.

I don't it's a matter of whining... And no the government has not conducted wide scale warrantless wiretapping before. I'm sure there have been a few cases of misconduct in the past, but NOTHING on this scale.
The President takes an oath to uphold the constitution when he takes office. And it doesn't bother you that he will wantonly violate that oath?
If this program isn't that bad... then why did so many top officials in the justice department (Bush appointees) quit over it?

Well at least we agree on Bush being a moron. Thats a start.

I mock freedom? Your complacency with the violation of our rights is mocking freedom!

Look, we're going to disagree no matter what, so lets save ourselves some headaches and agree to disagree. At least we are still able to do that in America.
