Very balanced and educated post. Key word used here is 'usable proteins'

Humans need cholesterol and fat in their diets.

I don't understand why this thread is turning into an argument or why AEF seems to be getting such a defensive attitude.

I don't think anyone is saying being a vegetarian is wrong. People are just answering the OP question and giving their experiences on the issue and what they have found though that experience and/or education.

Take what you like and leave the rest. ;)
You can get cholesterol from vegetables, grains and so on. Of course we need cholesterol, but meat just gives us more of it.

the way I see it, we're designed omnivores, to function properly one needs both plant matter and animal matter in their diet, a deficency in one can lead to problems, as can an overabundance of either, shouldn't cut out meat in a diet but you could always just have less=]

You really do not need meat at all. In fact your body has a harder time digesting meat and pulling nutrients from it more than plants. Everything that meat provides can be gotten through plants, fruits and grains. B12 can be gotten through dairy such as yogurt.

Absolutely not true. Your body is designed to process meat and vegetables equally. Everything that meat provides can be gotten from plants and fungus, yes, but not as easily nor as efficiently. Look at th gorilla. It subsists primarily from a vegetable diet, yet suppliments it with grubs, incects, etc. However, to maintain its strength, a gorilla must eat upwards of 50 lbs of plants.

To be frank, it's because AEF likes to argue, and even something as innocuous as considering vegetarianism he can find a way to argue about it. It started to devolve right here
Yeah, but there is no reason to eat meat at all. its wasteful, pollutes and is overall more unhealthy. The overconsumption of meat in America contributes to cancer, diabetes and obesity with all of the cholesterol in it.
AEF knows that people on this board aren't going to just let an overgeneralization (which it is) like that slide.
I also have ethical issues with meat.
Also, people will take issue with this. That's just asking for it.

or why AEF seems to be getting such a defensive attitude.

can't really blame him when he's put on the defensive, though. Even if he brought it on himself...

do you have scientific, empirical proof of this? The kind of proof you are so fond of asking for from others? :thumbup

Never understood the ethical argument for being vegetarian myself, yeah, if you dont like the treatment of the animals, buy free range meat or something. The truth is that if everyone went vegetarian it would do more harm to the animals. Millions of animals would be needlessly slaughtered as keeping useless animals would not be a financial option to farmers. Because of this, entire species would become extinct.

I understand the ethical reasons, I understand why people want to be vegetarians, I support them if they want. However if you are doing it because "there is 20lbs of undigested meat in our colons" or "You body can't properly process meat" then you are lying to at least yourself.

People who have lived for thousands of years on a vegetarian diet? Thats all the proof you need.
Don't give me that shit. People have also followed the purported Son of God for thousands of years but you don't believe in that, so don't throw that kind of anecdotal crap around. It doesn't play well with your style...

You don't need meat to survive, or be healthy.
This is an opinion, albeit one based in fact.
To wit: I need meat to be healthy because I would be unhappy without it. There is more to a wholistic health picture than simply physical health.

THIS is fact. Well done.

You really don't need "scientific proof" for something like people living just fine without meat ever since humans came up with the concept thousands of years ago. They just do with out meat. Its fairly obvious that meat is just personal preference in diet.

You really don't need "scientific proof" for something like people believing that the Son of God walked the Earth thousands of years ago, died on the Cross and was resurrected three days later. They just do with out seeing, so they have faith. Its fairly obvious that Jesus Christ was the Messiah and not just personal preference in religious dieties.
See what I'm saying...

obeisity isn't due to over consumption of meat more as the chemicals that go into commercially processed meat and just sheer laziness. I'm overweight and I can tell you I could be alot more active. Homosapiens as a whole have been consuming meat since they showd up on planet Earth.

I don't care if you think it's right or wrong or we could do with out it. But I need a balance of meat and vegetables are natural and always have been. I eat alot of meat and I don't have diabetes, and i doubt ill get cancer and My cholesterol is below what it is supposed to be and i know this because i just had it tested.

I have vegetarians and vegans.

actually obesity can be blamed on a number of facts, that being lifestyle, genetics, medical illness, I think you have your facts on obesity a little mixed up my friend.
