Let them show themselves up for the Nazis they are, is what you're saying? Good point, one I would agree with if it wasn't for stupid people voting for them without understanding wtf it is they are voting for. This probably sounds quite radical but I'd like to see people have to pass a test on politics before they are allowed to vote. Then again that would cost far too much so wouldn't work either. Guess democracy actually is pretty flawed but there isn't a lot better out there either.
Who would make such a test? What political affiliations would be allowed to be considered? BNP? Any law that restricts rights of the people is a wrong-headed law. Laws should protect rights against government & outside forces, or balance rights between citizens. You can't legislate people to not be stupid. To try would be stupid, and therefore against the law. :cool

I don't really have any decent input except to say it is so refreshing to see people debate w/out name-calling and slinging insults. A big step-up from some of the boards I have posted on over the years.:clap Y'all must not be PaidShills here. WooHoo!

Or is it just this thread???;)

This is a tough one... I'd say let them show their faces so we know who they are and can keep an eye on them, yet educate the voters that do vote for them so they aren't blind sighted by ignorance. I think groups like this come out of fear and obviously culture clashes...especially right now when people have a hate on for Muslims rather than JUST radicals.

banning the bNP would be the worst thing you could do, the only way top defeat bigotry is to allow it to speak, debate it and show it up for what it is

give em enough rope

i know they have some support but it will never be enough to do any damage

Oh cool, a club!!! WooHoo!

But I'm being serious. If I had a quarter for every time I've had slurs flung at me for my opinions over the years, I'd be rich.

I've never understood it. To sling insults means one has no facts to back up ones opinions. Unless one is just a boor. I've come across those too.

It's nice to see people debate like adults.

In my opinion, you shouldn't be able to limit a political group until/unless they do something illegal. And even then, you can only limit those people who have committed illegal acts, not the political party as a whole.

Is it illegal to slander race in England? I know in the US you can get some sort of violation for race-hating, but not sure what the specific laws on it are.

Anyway, my best suggestion would be to limit any race-based hate speech by law, and just take them in when they break that law. Limiting a political group as a whole is not a good idea though - that's government sponsored censorship. A possible exception should be made if that political group has a proven track record of wanting to kill people or do some other sort of serious damage to the communities. For instance, if it were along the lines of the KKK.

That's the price you pay for freedom of speech. It's also how you have a Jewish lawyer representing the NSPA in the late seventies for their right to hold a demonstration in the Jewish community of Skokie, Illinois. As distasteful and despicable as some agendas are, freedom of speech has to apply to everyone, or it's not really freedom at all.

They have won two MEPs in the Euro elections, including Nick Griffin. Thanks to stupid voters, we now have a representitive in the European Parliment who publically denies the hollocaust. :mad:thumbdown

Admittedly, that shocked the shit out of me...I really don't have anything intelligent to add to that really...that's how shocked I am! :eek

When it comes to hate-based groups, I think someone said you really can't ban them if they've caused no physical harm. However, they can incite violence, and sometimes emotional harm is just as damaging. It's a slippery slope for sure and while I'd love for folks like this to do us all a favor a jump off, there is merit and cost to free speech.

Let's be realistic, you can't just BAN the BNP, even if people wanted it to happen. That sort of thing just isn't acceptable in this country. And let's be realistic on another note - there is simply no way that the BNP are going to get to power - at least not in our lifetime. You ought to be saying how we should ban the Muslim extremists also, they're just as dangerous as the British national party. You're worrying about nothing for the moment - it's mainly hype that's creating fears about the BNP.

The real worry is when everyone around you, even ethnics, start voting for them because they're sick to death of the amount of immigrants that are coming in. The island is too small and the country can't hold it - it's these left-wing labour twats who've created these problems, so if you want to blame anyone, blame the left-wingers; it'll be on their shoulders if the BNP ever get to power.

You sound like you voted for them.

I'd say that why the BNP got so much support is over the anger that the UK electorate has with the major political parties, and the political establishment after the recent expenses scandal. Voting for the BNP is the ultimate protest vote, most people that voted for them probably didn't gave a shit about their policy platform, let alone agreed with it.

An almost identical thing happened here in Queensland in 1998 where the right-wing One Nation Party got 25% of the vote in state elections, campaigning against immigration and putting forth a populist image. Most people just voted for them out of protest and their dis-satisfaction with the other political parties, after 1998, their influence waned, and are practically non-existent now. I predict the same will happen with the BNP, but they will probably achieve some gains in 2010.

Just my 2 cents.

:homo:

people will vote for these type of parties as a protest, look at Ireland with the Lisbon treaty!!
I very much doubt that they would ever have the support to get into government, well hopefully anyway.

Hmmm, never heard of any extremist Muslim political parties in this country. Could you tell me more about them? Extrest Muslims are pretty much banned, why do you think they keep getting locked up, even for just publically preaching their shit?
I also don't get why people would vote BNP as a protest vote. When I went to vote, there were about 30 candidates for my Euro MP, surely voting for an independant would make more sense than a Nazi. If it was just a protest vote, it's back fired because we now have two BNP MEPs who by grouping together with extremist MEPs from other countries in the European Parliment, can only get more powerful.

as much as I hate the twat and his mindless ignorant followers, this just plays into his hands

this will help him recruit - he need to be allowed to speak, give him his 15 minutes, debate him and defeat him with reasoned logic
