I'll just make a few comments and then leave the thread. We are starting to argue in circles.
I live in the NW. The gun racks are not decorative here.
Teachers are not cops. Please see my answer to that to Donnie above.
For the bolded statement. I would never make the argument that cops should do their job un-armed. Yes, that happens, they are killed with their own weapons and they are trained to expect that possibility, but it still happens. So what makes a teacher, who isn't trained or even if they were, capable of carrying in perfect safety in a school environment?
Ok...I'm outta here.
How would you make sure that the teachers weapon was secure at all times including while the're teaching so that some kid couldn't get hold of it?
And the award for not knowing what an analogy is goes to...
Dear God..... most of you talk as though it is NORMAL for guns to be even NEAR a school..... :eek
Goddamnit, can we get past the whole "teachers cannot be trusted with guns" thing? That's a really poor argument.
A holster. Hell, even a gun safe would be fine with me. If they have time to lock the doors and close the blinds, they'll have time to get a gun out of a safe. How would you make sure that the teachers weapon was secure at all times including while the're teaching so that some kid couldn't get hold of it?
Nobody in a deadly situation for the first time has ever had the experience. The vast majority of police have NO experience in a life-or-death kill-or-be-killed situation. Most cops go a career without pulling their weapon. So would most teachers. If a kid has a gun in class "for attention", then you're damn right I would want the teacher to have a gun. What's the "innocent" kid gonna do while the unarmed teacher calls the cops for help? Think he might freak out and start shooting people? Who knows what it would turn into.I'm not sure what has been going on in here, but before I read everything, I am just going to say why I am against it.
The main reason why is simple: Experience. A teacher may have the experience of hunting, or taken a few classes, but they haven't had nearly the experience that most police officers and other officials have. If a kid had a gun in class, he is just as much as a victim as anyone else. And until he actually harms someone else, killing him is a horrible thing to do. But a teacher might just see a gun and shoot, killing the kid, who might not of ever had any intention of hurting anyone, just getting some attention he so desperately needed. Not only that, but a teacher wouldn't be able to react the same way people who have been in this situation before would react, they would be unpredictable, they could accidentally shoot a different student in panic or by missing, because they wouldn't be in the correct frame of mind to shoot at a student.
What we need to do is instill more guards and police officers, with guns, who can react from the inside if a shooting happens. And then we need to get to the root of the problem. By stopping things like bullying, that create students who want to harm others, we sill stop these shootings from happening at the same time. I feel kind of safe at my school. We have at least 2 armed police officers there everyday, as well as video monitoring throughout the entire school, that is monitored in the office by a police officer, if a shooting starts, they can end it before too many people get hurt.

More police officers in schools is a no-go too, imo. It would literally cost billions nation-wide.
Well, more then likely, allowing teachers to have guns won't fix anything. It's not like every teacher will be able to afford a gun, permit, and classes for it--especially with how much they are paid. What are the chances the one student who wants to shoot people will end up in the one class with a teacher that has a gun? We need more police officers in schools to control the situation anyways.
And again, I'm not advocating teachers swarming the hallways and clearing room-to-room. That's asinine, they aren't trained for it. I'm advocating, for teachers that choose to and meet the criteria I laid out, that they have a weapon to defend the room against someone attempting to get in. The exact same rules they have now, except if the asshole gets into the room he gets shot at instead of executing the entire room unopposed.
Guys, let's leave the exaggeration out of the debate section, shall we?
... it's not mandatory...
Why not give everyone in a job a gun seeing that some nutter could start shooting up the place at any time? Personally I think trying to restrict the guns would be better than turning the place into the wild west.
If something happens..... lots of cell phones can dial 911.... let the authorities stand around outside and wait for people to get killed.
It won't turn into the wild goddamn west. FFS, stop mentioning that. Just because people will have guns does not mean they're going to run around on horseback robbing the banks, raping the womens, and shooting the sherrifs. We are talking about people with no criminal history, no visible mental illness, who have been trained in how to use and care for a firearm. We're not talking about a drive-thru Guns 'R' Us on every corner.
We keep guns under our beds, in our closets, in shoe boxes tucked away in a corner of the room or on top of a cabinet.
are you a teacher? what school? high school? college?
Perhaps they didn't have lock down drills. :dunnoI've fixed it so its a little closer to what has actually happened in events like this....
I'm not sure having a cop on campus would make things get out of control or not. Never been in that situation.Yeah, man. Cause having a cop on campus could sure make things get out of control.
You live in a fairytale.
