I'll just make a few comments and then leave the thread. We are starting to argue in circles.

I live in the NW. The gun racks are not decorative here.

Teachers are not cops. Please see my answer to that to Donnie above.

For the bolded statement. I would never make the argument that cops should do their job un-armed. Yes, that happens, they are killed with their own weapons and they are trained to expect that possibility, but it still happens. So what makes a teacher, who isn't trained or even if they were, capable of carrying in perfect safety in a school environment?

Ok...I'm outta here.

I am in total agreement with you.

How would you make sure that the teachers weapon was secure at all times including while the're teaching so that some kid couldn't get hold of it?

Require they keep it concealed on their person like I said.

At some point you have to have some trust in the people designated to look over your children during the school day. I'll say again, if they're not responsible enough to properly handle a firearm, they have no business being in charge of a whole group of kids and especially not my kids....

I'm not sure what has been going on in here, but before I read everything, I am just going to say why I am against it.

The main reason why is simple: Experience. A teacher may have the experience of hunting, or taken a few classes, but they haven't had nearly the experience that most police officers and other officials have. If a kid had a gun in class, he is just as much as a victim as anyone else. And until he actually harms someone else, killing him is a horrible thing to do. But a teacher might just see a gun and shoot, killing the kid, who might not of ever had any intention of hurting anyone, just getting some attention he so desperately needed. Not only that, but a teacher wouldn't be able to react the same way people who have been in this situation before would react, they would be unpredictable, they could accidentally shoot a different student in panic or by missing, because they wouldn't be in the correct frame of mind to shoot at a student.

What we need to do is instill more guards and police officers, with guns, who can react from the inside if a shooting happens. And then we need to get to the root of the problem. By stopping things like bullying, that create students who want to harm others, we sill stop these shootings from happening at the same time. I feel kind of safe at my school. We have at least 2 armed police officers there everyday, as well as video monitoring throughout the entire school, that is monitored in the office by a police officer, if a shooting starts, they can end it before too many people get hurt.

A holster. Hell, even a gun safe would be fine with me. If they have time to lock the doors and close the blinds, they'll have time to get a gun out of a safe.

Nobody in a deadly situation for the first time has ever had the experience. The vast majority of police have NO experience in a life-or-death kill-or-be-killed situation. Most cops go a career without pulling their weapon. So would most teachers. If a kid has a gun in class "for attention", then you're damn right I would want the teacher to have a gun. What's the "innocent" kid gonna do while the unarmed teacher calls the cops for help? Think he might freak out and start shooting people? Who knows what it would turn into.

More police officers in schools is a no-go too, imo. It would literally cost billions nation-wide.

Well, more then likely, allowing teachers to have guns won't fix anything. It's not like every teacher will be able to afford a gun, permit, and classes for it--especially with how much they are paid. What are the chances the one student who wants to shoot people will end up in the one class with a teacher that has a gun? We need more police officers in schools to control the situation anyways.

I'd walk away from the teaching profession if they made me carry a gun, and I bet a lot of teachers would too. My old mans a teacher and I know for sure (despite the concept being completely absurd to him) he wouldn't do it.

So who does that leave? The teachers who can't wait to carry guns around kids? Can't wait to take that class. :D

Again, I don't really envision a teacher ending a school shooting before it starts:

And again, I'm not advocating teachers swarming the hallways and clearing room-to-room. That's asinine, they aren't trained for it. I'm advocating, for teachers that choose to and meet the criteria I laid out, that they have a weapon to defend the room against someone attempting to get in. The exact same rules they have now, except if the asshole gets into the room he gets shot at instead of executing the entire room unopposed.

I just think locking the doors, closing the blinds, and pulling your gun is a much better way of protecting a classroom during a lockdown than just locking the doors and closing the blinds and pulling your prayer mat.

... it's not mandatory...

No, of course not.

Only the teachers that really want to carry guns get them, that makes logical sense. :24:

Better give guns to the students that don't want them, they can be class reps. 2 shots for yes, one for no.

Hyperbole shotgun at the ready. I know you like that.

I'm just glad that the schools here DON'T have cops in the hallways or in the office or on the prowl of the grounds.

They have a security person who is in the hallways.... along with the teachers and Principal and VP's.... during class changes and lunches. They issue tickets for improper parking... no parking permit..... etc.

No gun on person. No guns in the building.

We have lock down drills too. Even live ones where the authorities come and enter the building to practice in the event something does go down.

Our schools have a no bullshit policy. You even talk trash.... you're out. And they get rid of lots of trash too. Mainly students expelled from the big city schools that move to the area.

Personally..... I don't want guns in the schools. If something happens..... lots of cell phones can dial 911.... let the authorities come in and do what everyone trained for.

Why not give everyone in a job a gun seeing that some nutter could start shooting up the place at any time? Personally I think trying to restrict the guns would be better than turning the place into the wild west.

I've fixed it so its a little closer to what has actually happened in events like this....

It won't turn into the wild goddamn west. FFS, stop mentioning that. Just because people will have guns does not mean they're going to run around on horseback robbing the banks, raping the womens, and shooting the sherrifs. We are talking about people with no criminal history, no visible mental illness, who have been trained in how to use and care for a firearm. We're not talking about a drive-thru Guns 'R' Us on every corner.

this is not exactly being trained to have one.......

We keep guns under our beds, in our closets, in shoe boxes tucked away in a corner of the room or on top of a cabinet.

Perhaps they didn't have lock down drills. :dunno

Yeah, man. Cause having a cop on campus could sure make things get out of control.
You live in a fairytale.
I'm not sure having a cop on campus would make things get out of control or not. Never been in that situation.

I don't live in a fairytale. Far from it. I just happen to live in an area where cops aren't present unless they are called in and asked to be. And so far.... that has always worked.
