I am not as eager to fight about the relative merits of the MacOS as you are. I have given my advice. You give yours. :)

My understanding is that Windows takes 2GB of RAM to run comfortably. I assume the computer you are looking for is for school work with no high demand programs like video processing or gaming otherwise 4GB of RAM would be better and for these programs a better video card is better then what you'll find on a Netbook which uses a minimal video card and shares the same RAM as the cpu. Dedicated video cards found on more expensive laptops have more power and their own dedicated memory. Something to consider depending on what the computer will be used for. If your child has any interest in computer related graphics, I would steer them away from a Netbook. If you decide to consider a regular laptop, for the sake of an informed decision, it would be good to make a PC-Mac laptop comparison of features.

If you want to run Windows 7 on your PC, here's what it takes:

  • 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
  • 1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
  • 16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
  • DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

Sadie...right now your being inundated with suggestions and a debate is developing about who's laptops dick is bigger,..do yourself a favor...make a list of everything you need the computer to do,..then to the side put whatever additional things you would like it to accomplish or do..if you have a budget,..you can sacrifice some of the things you would like to stay within it....then go online and do your research, find one that is right for you,..not one that someone else thinks is great for their own uses.
some online stores are cheaper than the box stores by about as much as 40%, and sometimes you can find one in the "refurbished" section of some websites that are just fine,..
i hope you get a good one.

Sadie, it's a shame Dell don't seem to do their Dell Outlet in Canada - I picked up an amazing Core i7 bargain that way that was brand new except for some minor (and they really were) scratches on the lid.

Refurbs or items with minor scratches are worth considering if budget is an issue.

Do hunt around though. Only other advice I'd give on top of Cod's is to check a good range if looking online or in store. Sometimes you can find a far better spec for just a few dollars more if your budget can stretch.

You know for an Apple lover, you sure have a lot of Non-Apple shit Ed.. :24::24::24::24:

I think you secretly admire all the rest of us but are ashamed to admit it.. :p

I have not one single piece of non-apple computer equipment. I consider it a false economy to by inferior equipment that is more expensive and has less features.

an ipad cant run multiple applications and its expensive as hell

that is a novelty for the rich and uninformed

The iPad is so much more than a novelty. It's just misunderstood.

It's meant as a portable internet terminal which works with your existing desktop. The reason it beats a netbook hands down is because it gives a better internet browsing experience than even a desktop computer. It's not a laptop replacement, it's an alternative. Most people barely use any of the functionality a laptop offers, so the iPad is perfect for them.

an ipad has no usb attachments so anything you want to save of print you cant

You can print via wireless.

You're right. Most people only use them for a keyboard, cd/dvd drive, usb ports, and maybe an sd card reader while not at a desk. Ipad users would probably use all of those also, but they can't.

do you have a thumb drive? :p

No. But I do have a LaCie external FireWire drive.

Not at all. The 80/20 rule applies. If you're mainly internet browsing, like most, then the iPad is perfect as it offers the bes internet browsing experience on the planet. As I keep saying but no one is obviously paying attention, THE IPAD IS MEANT AS A PARTNER FOR YOUR DESKTOP. So, why would you need another drive, another USB port etc etc? Why on earth would you want to double up like that and give you a really shit unit to use with a tiny screen, crap resolution, pointless keyboard etc.

A netbook does everything a laptop does, but SO MUCH WORSE. Why bother with one?

"The best internet browsing experience on the planet"????

Go ahead, quantify that. Prove it isn't the delusional statement of yet another Mac-obsessed fanboy. Perhaps you should qualify it with "unless you use Flash or like to type on a keyboard".

Why would I need another drive or keyboard? Because my desktop stays on my desk top. If I'm travelling, I want that same functionality to travel with me, hence the creation of the laptop. Maybe I want to type up homework between classes, or respond to a work email at the airport. No way I'm doing that efficiently without a keyboard. When I'm done with the homework ot making a presentation for work, maybe I need to save it to a thumbdrive. Not doing that with an Ipad.

When I said 2GB, I was not referring to minimum system requirements.

I see by your defensive remark you didn't bother to look at the specification link..

That was not my personal comment of "If you want to run Windows 7 on your PC, here's what it takes:" but rather what was in the Windows link that I posted.. :D

I only increased the font size on the Or to make it visible..:p
