Oh come on dude. I'm just giving her good advice. You may very much regret owning and operating a Windows based Netbook. People have gone Windows for ages based on one thing, they are cheaper. No argument there, but historically that is the only thing going for them if you want to discuss a no issue OS. That's a fact. I'm going to step away from this discussion because I all ready see where it's headed. :p

You're going to step away from the discussion because you can't disagree that there's no reason she needs to invest in a Mac computer for a high school student

I used Macs in college for design, and I use Windows personally. With the exception of Vista, I have had little to zero problems with the OS. Especially now that I use Windows 7. Your arguments are based on your personal use, and unless the person buying the computer needs to multitask, write code, make movies and edit on photoshop, where is the necessity in getting a Mac. All current computers are obsolete after four years anyway, so when the time comes that she can make an educated decision on her next computer, maybe she will find a use for a Mac.

Besides aesthetics, I see no use for a Mac for me personally

a smart phone, an i pad, a laptop,e-book reader,calculators etc.

Computer: (n) A device that computes, especially a programmable electronic machine that performs high-speed mathematical or logical operations or that assembles, stores, correlates, or otherwise processes information

my point was simply that you can compare an ipad to a laptop to a smart phone etc. the technology is there,..they are just designed/meant for different uses/functions.

You are incorrect on so many levels I don't know where to begin.

Besides the fact that its an electronic device there is a huge difference between a smartphone and a laptop.
Mainly the fact that everything is java based (which is garbage) and up until recently smart phones didnt support flash.

I'm not going to continue because your examples are clearly a troll post

Right now I'm using Vista but since I need to take my laptop in to be repaired anyway, I was thinking on getting windows 7 installed instead....do you think that's a good idea, is it better?

I think that 7 is tons better, but make sure to ask if the drivers on your computer are windows 7 compatible, unfortunately when i upgraded to 7, because my computer is about 4 years old, the drivers for my dvd drive were incompatible and it doesnt work anymore.

everything else does i.e the card readers and USB ports (of course) but not the DVD drive

personally,..im leery of any "newer" microsoft/windows O.S....i still use xp, Microsoft has a bad habit of putting out a product before all the bugs are worked out

I'll be sure to ask. My laptop is only two years old, I hope it's not a problem. A few months ago I dropped it and broke the LCD screen not to mention the wireless button. I was lucky enough to come across the twin of mine, bought by a family member at the very same time, only the motherboard is gone. I'm hoping I can use the parts to fix my own, and I'm hoping it'll be cheaper to fix....know what I mean?

Windows XP is an excellent example of a sturdy Microsoft OS.

Windows 7 is nothing like Vista though, and because you can't buy a computer with XP anymore, except online, I wouldnt worry about 7 being worse than Vista, because it definitely isnt.

I love to dabble in PSP and I can still do so using Vista, but I can't seem to get some of the features to work. I don't know if you're at all familiar with the program but those are the bestest features...lol BUT...will they work with windows 7? Who knows.

Windows 7 has a compatibility function that can make program work as if you're using a Windows 95, XP, or Vista Machine

All the Notebooks I have looked at have an Intel Atom Processor ( or equiv ) and Windows 7 Starter Edition only to make the system run efficiently as possible.. These are not made and were never made to replace a Laptop or full computer. As an eample this HP version at $279.00.

The HP Mini 110-3018 is the perfect go anywhere companion. It features an Intel Atom Processor with 1GB system memory, and built-in Wi-Fi access. The 10.1" LED backlit display gives you a brilliant view of your content. And a 160GB hard drive offers ample storage room for all your media.

If you have no idea what the difference between an Atom processor and Dual Core is read up on it..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Atom

Like I said before, you get what you pay for..

I would recommend along the lines of what Siphorous said.. Core i7 or even Core i3 would be fine and as I know sexysadie is in Canada I happen to know Bestbuy / Futureshop is having a sale on those right now for back to school.. I would not spend the minimum but then again at times you can get a great deal. You need to look carefully..

You can buy a Lemon in anything and yes they make Lemon Apple products.. :D

I'm back. :) I realize Mac's don't fit into everyone's budget. I've all ready said why a Mac is better- The MacOS is superior, without issues. I've already said Windows machines are cheaper. 90% of computer buyers, buy based on that fact alone. (However if you look at top end laptops, the MacBookPro is priced very favorably with Windows models.)

If your goal a basic functional computer, a Netbook should kind of do the job but if I recall this thread started with the OP ragging about how crappy his Netbook is. Hmm. I guarantee that you can take any Netbook out there and compare it to a MacBook and the MacBook will provide a better overall computing experience.

Some very sound advice, thank you very much sweetheart, I'll keep it in mind when I'm out there looking. Futureshop will of course be my first stop.

I like how you cut out the rest of my post as to imply that I am for netbooks.

Sadie...right now your being inundated with suggestions and a debate is developing about who's laptops dick is bigger,..do yourself a favor...make a list of everything you need the computer to do,..then to the side put whatever additional things you would like it to accomplish or do..if you have a budget,..you can sacrifice some of the things you would like to stay within it....then go online and do your research, find one that is right for you,..not one that someone else thinks is great for their own uses.
some online stores are cheaper than the box stores by about as much as 40%, and sometimes you can find one in the "refurbished" section of some websites that are just fine,..
i hope you get a good one.

I am not as eager to fight about the relative merits of the MacOS as you are. I have given my advice. You give yours. :)

So, if I decide to go with the netbook, as long as it has 2gb of ram or more it would suffice?

My understanding is that Windows takes 2GB of RAM to run comfortably. I assume the computer you are looking for is for school work with no high demand programs like video processing or gaming otherwise 4GB of RAM would be better and for these programs a better video card is better then what you'll find on a Netbook which uses a minimal video card and shares the same RAM as the cpu. Dedicated video cards found on more expensive laptops have more power and their own dedicated memory. Something to consider depending on what the computer will be used for. If your child has any interest in computer related graphics, I would steer them away from a Netbook. If you decide to consider a regular laptop, for the sake of an informed decision, it would be good to make a PC-Mac laptop comparison of features.
