Is it ok to be proud of your skin color?

OK, I can't be bothered to read 22 bloody pages, so I'm just going to throw my two cents in here:

one should not be ashamed of their skin colour or race, but by the same token, neither should one be proud of it. How can you be proud of something that you have no control over? Furthermore, how can you be proud of something that is completely irrelevant to anything?

Surely our societies have progressed to a point where we realise that race and skin colour are little more than physical appearance. It's like me saying "I'm proud to have big feet", as if all people with big feet are some kind of group that you belong to.

When you say you're proud to be white, or you're proud to be black, you're basically saying "gee, I sure am glad I'm [insert skin colour] and not [insert other skin colour]." It should not matter what skin colour you are in the first place.

If you think about... was slavery all that bad?

We brought blacks from a continent that currently faces, poverty, starvation, genecide, aids.... etc.

It was a favor.

look at 90% of the African American race here in the united states...

I think Martin Luther King would be have his hand on his head shaking in disappointment.

White Pride!

Oh wait... am I racist for saying that?

-_-

Why are you proud of your race? You didn't earn it, in any sense.

I take pride in my education, my career, and my accomplishments. I am participatory to the things I pride myself in. They've happened because of me.

Being white may be an asset or a handicap, but it's nothing more than a fact of life. A condition.

I agree WHOLE heartily with your answer 'Hisholiness'.

Sadly, African American people are JUST as racist as white. But saying that makes me feel racist. I have to work in a job that because I sound white, some of the african american women ASSUME that i am racist. That kindof makes me mad.

Is it ok to be proud of your skin color?

The short answer.... No

Let me explain my point of view on this before you jump me.
I think is ok to be proud of your heritage but not your color. When you say you are proud to be white, it implies that being white is somehow better than being of some other color because you aren't discerning between heritages at that point, just color.
Saying your proud that you are white is like saying you are proud to be tall, this implies that it is better than being short...

So when I hear someone say they are proud to be "white" it makes me wonder if it's because they are glad they are not another color, or if they are trying to say they are proud of their heritage and they weren't just articulate enough with the wording of their statement.

agree!
