I honestly think it has a lot to do with the fact that men think they have to be macho and tough, and being gay means you're not a real man in their eyes. Though I think that a lot of the super homophobic guys out there are closet gays or bisexuals that are trying to hide it by overcompensating the other direction.

That's the best explanation yet! Thanks retro. I wholeheartedly agree with you on that. Men will boast and brag about what women they had sex with and try to add as many notches to their belts as they can.
