Hitchens is correct here when he writes; "in all my experience in life, I have seldom seen a more powerful argument for the fallen nature of man, and his inability to achieve perfection, than those countries in which man sets himself up to replace God with the State"

Sounds like he's short on experience.
A trip to the Islamic nations of the Middle East might be enlightening for him.

The bug works in ironies, it's kind of it's modus operandi...accuse people of x, do x repeatedly. When called out, accuse people of y, then do y. Act indignant, make 5 new screen names.

He needs to realize that kind of behavior is obvious to most people.
A course in critical thinking might set him on a better path :D

I like to give everyone the benefit of doubt, being I know what it's like not to take a popular view on an internet forum. However, given the nature of the posts and the relative short amount of time numerous "newbies" have been posting threads in similar nature and tone, one can't help but wonder.

Ya I agree this is definitely not about having an unpopular stance, it's about carrying on like a complete moron and having zero credibility. It's a shame, because real debate can't happen so long as the trolling does.

I don't think Islamic countries hold a candle to 20th century China or Russia. I don't know about the atheism part of it but Marxism was devastating in the last century.

Atheism was definitely a part of it. People fell for that crap too. I guess the atheists used tactics of censorship against anyone who spoke out against them. I' sure they were accused of false crimes they didn't commit. Nowadays atheists can only resort to sounding like a bunch of screechy monkeys.

There are very few people who I sincerely feel that they have their head up their ass, and if it makes you feel any more special, you're one of those few;)

That is assuming you actually believe what you write.

I do believe what I write. You see all the destructive regimes of the last century began as trying to create a better society, or at least that was the message. Pretty soon atrocities were committed for "the greater good". The same thing is happening with the new atheist movement and their speaking out against religion. Get rid of religion then define morality. Then totally control people. It's the same thing that happened with Marxism. Take a look at this forum and those who try to control it by calling anyone who disagrees with them a troll. This is the "religion forum" that has a many agnostics/atheists.That makes them the trolls.

The issue with your thread is that you present a claim as an absolute.... that all atheists are of that nature.
They aren't.
And history does show that religion has been used as a motivator for crimes against humanity, also.

The old saying, the road to Hell is paved with good intentions, applies to all.

Do you really think this type of trolling convinces a reader that hasn't yet formed an opinion?

Try adding a little humor, or is that too much of a challenge for a fundie? :D

( obviously not pointed at me but I thought I'd comment anyway )

It's programmed behavior.
And that's one of the dangers of fundamentalism. ( Take note.....I'm not calling this Christianity, it's fundamentalism )
That level of 'belief'/'faith' requires self censorship of rational thought almost on the level of being a robot programmed to repeat circular logic on a looped track.
While they can be a good neighbor, they can also be an incredibly destructive element within an advanced technological society.
Decision making on their level is both arbitrary on an intellectual level because of their personal translations of the Bible ......and absolute as a result of it being faith generated.
For instance, science and medicine, necessities of an advanced technological society, become evils in their minds and society suffers from the conflicts.
The seeking of knowledge becomes an evil endeavor unless it's restricted to the Bible.
Reality is not the 'friend' of a fundamentalist. And so, it's denied.

He can't help it as long as he has 'faith' but that 'faith' is constantly challenged by reality.
It makes for a very rigid but brittle dogma. One minuscule fracture in that psyche and all faith is lost. So there is desperation in maintaining 'faith' at all costs, and that includes defying/defiling logic.
It is ironic that kind of faith is actually based on denial.
The belief of that which can't be tested is based upon denial of that which is testable.
It obviously does not promote good mental health.

And that's why you see threads like this one.
To prove the unprovable.......he can't help it.

Nope. Everyone ignored him successfully for a number of weeks and the insanity stopped. Twas lovely :D
Suddenly a random crop of a half dozen of his parrots show up...coincidence, surely. :tooth
God's messengers all make the same arguments?

I highly doubt that.

I really don't get what is being discussed here, the offtopic chatter anyway, but what does it matter? Is the reason accusations are flying because no one has any answers and are looking to deflect from the topic? It looks like it.

Oh, does it look like that? Or does it look like a majority of the forum is nothing but amused by a bunch of asinine topics being churned out at break neck speed.

Post something of value, something grounded in fact and reason, whatever it may be, and you'd see different results.
