In both those instances I'm of the opinion it's a personal choice if you want to condone it. If a person is unable to make that decision for themselves they could leave it to the courts to decide to which I believe they have. Myself personally I don't condone it. I find it disrespectful which is surprising because I'm not one of the most patriotic people walking the planet. Other than flying the actual flag or draping it over a casket, then giving it to a family member I don't believe anything beyond that should be done.

I guess we're in agreement then. Although it's an expression of free speech, if someone was burning a flag next to me, I know me well enough to say I would probably punch them in the throat. They have freedom to express themselves, but not freedom to never face any consequences for their actions. Just like the Westboro fucks. The courts may say it's ok, but if I ever see it, I won't tolerate it.

A symbol such as the American flag is a source of pride for many Americans of all ethnic origins.
I think a subtle reminder of the date might have been called for if someone was threatened. I just find those with a little bit of power too often try to laud it over others.
 
The story made a pretty big splash here, since our population is majority Mexican and of Mexican descent. The administrators confiscated several Mexican flags, but allowed Tshirts with the Mexican flag and flags painted on students' faces.

I teach at a high school where this could have happened, but didn't. While "innocent until proven guilty" doesn't exist in public school, I still don't agree with preventing the students from wearing the American flag. Administrators could have watched for trouble without going that far.

Is it possible that the wearing of the shirts wasn't the beginning of this drama? Isn't it conceivable that these students have a history and the principal knew when to step in? That the shirts being American flags had nothing to do with it?

I would hate someone stepping in at the last moment of me disciplining my children and telling me I'm doing it all wrong or that I was being too hard on them. Since they wouldn't have been there from the beginning where I clearly laid out the ground rules and they were constantly pushing the boundaries... There is always a back story that we don't see or hear about in the news... yet it's fun to turn it into some unpatriotic principal jumping on the patriotism of these poor innocent students...

The district does not concur with the Live Oak High School administration's interpretation of either board or district policy related to these actions.

That was a statement by the school district... who would have had to have spoken with both parties prior to making the statement. Though I'm sure the argument will be that they had to come out and say that to save face, so they threw the administration under the bus blah blah blah.

Of course they threw the administration under the bus. Hell, they had to say something to get the tea baggers off their backs.

Nothing but a bunch of bullshit. People bitch and complain when teachers/administration don't keep the kids in line. Then they bitch and complain when they do. If the parents have a problem with it, then they can take their kids out of school and they can deal with them.

Sure. It's also conceivable that the VP panicked and overreacted for fear of creating a public incident, and in the process created a public incident.

Absolutely it's possible... everything is possible here since none of us know the facts.
But if that's the case, then why is everyone up in arms over this? Why have the tea baggers swarmed this town protesting when they don't know the facts?

It's because people are fucking sheep and the 30 second sound bite is their Shepard.


And me personally, no old wounds here... hell, I hardly need to yell at my kids. They have been raised by parents who care enough to be involved. So things almost never get out of control where I'm yelling...


My whole beef is with the idiots out there screaming for justice when they don't even know what that is.
