Absolutely it's possible... everything is possible here since none of us know the facts.
But if that's the case, then why is everyone up in arms over this? Why have the tea baggers swarmed this town protesting when they don't know the facts?

It's because people are fucking sheep and the 30 second sound bite is their Shepard.

And me personally, no old wounds here... hell, I hardly need to yell at my kids. They have been raised by parents who care enough to be involved. So things almost never get out of control where I'm yelling...

My whole beef is with the idiots out there screaming for justice when they don't even know what that is.
:24: I'd originally read that as the people are fucking sheep ... as in the sheep.

What's this about the Tea Party people? I haven't read anything about that.

Four students from Live Oak High School received a three-hour standing ovation from about 100 American flag-waving tea partyers Saturday along Monterey Road near Third Street.

The ovation came in the form of a mostly peaceful rally where the overwhelming sound of car horns blaring took over downtown and one person was arrested for misdemeanor battery when he swatted the sign out of the hand of a Tea Party activist

And the other shoe drops...

It seems that there were problems last year and there were fights over Mexican flags and American flags. So this is a continuation from last year and the principle decided to get a handle on it before it got out of hand like it did the year before.

Hm. I guess next time the administration will think twice when deciding whether to suppress free speech or patriotism. I spose you're assuming that the tea party people are racist?

I especially like that last line:
"We're all from somewhere else. We need to honor each other's cultures," she said.
Too bad she only means it halfway.

Free speech does not apply in the classroom, you should know that.

The racist part?

I would say there is an above average racial overtone in the tea party? Yes, but I don't think for one second that tea party = racist.

When I look at this story, I don't see it as being a racist one at all. Hell, I never looked at it that way.

The way I see it with the added information is...

Last year they had problems with both sides waving their flags (simplified version)
This year the principal allowed Cinco De Mayo celebrations while addressing the students that "protested" by wearing American flag clothing to avoid the problems they had last year.
I guess he could have said no celebrations of any kind, but wouldn't that also apply to the 4th of July? Because if on the 4th of July there was a group of kids of Mexican decent wearing Mexican flag clothing, would the principle be right in asking them to go home if they refused to turn their clothing inside out?

So I guess it boils down to keeping the peace or denying everyone all holiday celebrations....

I think the principal was in the right, but the media and protesters blew this into something it wasn't. These kids weren't prosecuted for being patriotic, they were being called out as the punks they were.

There have been conservative movements to stop people defiling the U.S. flag, to include wearing it as clothing. Wonder how that fits into this story (if at all)? :)

it doesnt cause they didnt wear the actual flag. they wore clothing that had the flag on it....Old Navy Tshirt that had a small one, swimshorts that had a flag pattern, a shirt that was spray painted to look like a flag, shoes that were red white and blue, etc.

You're bias spews from every word. Why you & your ilk are so ashamed to be American that anyone showing national pride is a fair target for ridicule is beyond me.

The right thing to do would have been to insist on business as usual. Above and beyond would have been to get with some of the parents or local organizers, explain the situation, and ask for their support by having an after school celebration or something. The principal's actions show that the kids wearing red white & blue weren't the only punks that day.

One would think a teacher would have adequate reading comprehension to understand simple concepts...

I guess not.......

Then enlighten me instead of tossing off a glib line and running off. If not to persuade me, then do it to persuade some anonymous reader.

go back from the beginning and reread all my posts. You will see that I don't believe this is about patriotism, not for one minute... it wasn't until the media made it into one.

These were punk kids trying to make a statement and they did so. Now they are crying over the consequences.
