You have to remember that we have all the illegal immigrants that aren't exactly helping out our economy.

Actually, the government WANTS illegal immigrants. They keep the Growers Union in check, PLUS, businesses like that they can violate US labor laws with illegals. There is NO vested intrest in stopping the flow.

IF the US was serious, they would restructure NAFTA to fix the issues that cause mexicans to have to cross the border. Mexico has vast oil reserves, but because the governmment is so corrupt, the people see none of that money. Vincente Fox made the equivilent of 5000 dollars a year as president of mexico, yet is now a multi millionare.

Are you two gentlemen saying the comparison is not valid? I'm looking for the difference, but it isn't exactly jumping out at me.

You act like it a ridiculous stretch. :dunno

It is a ridiculous stretch. I never implied that the government should take ownership of all private colleges and Universities and open the doors to everyone. That would be more in line with communist views.

I'm merely asking the question whether or not free higher education would benefit us all in the long run.
And if you read through my posts, you will see that I'm not suggesting that everyone is entitled to a free ride. Maybe free isn't the right term since it would imply that you don't have to work at it. But why not have a system in place that will pay for your college if you work hard in school and got good grades? Maybe something similar to the CALGRANT where you basically get a free state education. This wouldn't effect the numerous private universities. This would just be a way to get more of our youth interested in furthering their education.

I am a firm believer in education, and it's sad to see us falling so far behind the rest of the world. We need to catch up, it's in all of our interest.

I'm still waiting to see the rules on who gets in and who doesn't

As I've mentioned before, the grades you achieve at school should determine who qualifies, different grades for different courses. If you dont achieve the qualifying grades and still want to do a course, you should pay for it.

I think Peter put it well...

It has to be based on merit. You have to work for it to get it. You would need to demonstrate that you will apply yourself and not be a waste of space.

I'm not sure the exact prerequisites, but there would need to be a set of established goals set, that would need to be filled before you gain your admittance.

They still take jobs american families would of taken, which is bad for our country as a whole. Illegal immigrants children would grow up and get "free" college as well. We spend tax money taking care of "under-privalaged" familes, the majority of are illegal immagrants. Sure they are nice to make rich people richer, but, they also make poor people poorer and take our jobs.

Bassicly, all the do is make things worse when it comes to our economy as a whole, we waste jobs, tax money, make rich people richer, and poor people poorer. That is what illegal immagrants do for us.

I see. With a title like "Free college for everybody," hopefully you see where the misinterpretation came in.

Your description of the idea is very similar to what we already have in place. Good grades and hard work get scholarships. State subsidized community colleges are dirt cheap. Federal tax laws give college credits and breaks. Federal service is always an option if you want another $40K.

I'm coming from a position of being raised in poverty, but now I'm working on my Masters. I worked and went to school at the same time, and I signed up for the best scholarship program in history (G.I.Bill). There are tons of resources already in place to help people get a college education. IMO, making it a federal issue will degrade the value of the degree.

I agree with your complete assessment of more education = more powerful individuals, and a more powerful nation. I also believe that we live on a very slippery slope of trying take care of everybody. Lines have to be drawn somewhere, because once the slide starts, it is very difficult to regain control.

They had their own laws. It was their land. Aliens landed on their land including Irish aliens with whisky.:p
