so what your saying is that if poor parents cant afford to pay they're kids dont get educated?

Also, I think people that don't get everything handed to them turn out as better, more well rounded people. Not everyone should have everything payed for by their parents. I do everything by myelsf, aka, I have a job and I use it to take care of my animals, save for school, and by lambs and other farm animals when the chances arrive. I ride my bike everywhere and find bus schedules when I need to. What I'm saying is I think I'm independent because my mom isn't always around to do everything for me, nor does she have the funds to do it with. We need at least a few independent people in our society.

Unfortunately, the truth is that many who are ready to learn really haven't got the intelligence to do a degree. Also, how could you tell who was and wasn't willing to learn? I think you should qualify for a college education by the grades you achieve at school.

Previous performance has been what colleges have always used to decide whom to admit. I don't have a problem with that criteria.

So the people who graduated from college in CA are useless slugs? Their diplomas are basically worthless?

Ever hear of the CALGRANT?

I haven't read the thread yet, but I'd like to mention that I occasionally take classes at the local CC. (I randomly get interested in stuff)

If memory serves, I think I pay something like $35 a class. Maybe it's in the thread already, but that seems as close to free as it gets already. :dunno:

I didn't mean anyone and everyone should go. There has to be limits

Should we change the thread title to "Free college for most?" ;) Whoever isn't included in the "most" part is sure gonna be pissed. Hello discrimination fights again.

The GI Bill has been a useless joke since the 80's.
I am totally speechless. :thumbdown

I'm trying to get a grasp of the end goal here. Government run medical care. Government run education system. Government run retirement plan. I'm waiting on government run job classifications so everybody has a fair shake. Cradle to grave baby!!

I think this has been tried somewhere, but I can't quite remember where.... :cool It seems like a good idea though; public school and public health care seem to be top rated around the world. I say we close our eyes and go for it.

If the government try to control, and try to make everyone the same, we won't have a well rounded community. The sad fact is that we do need people to clean up houses, mow lawns, run fast food joints, and other not so educated and not so great jobs. We also, need bosses, and tycoons. If you try to make everyone fair, no one will be rich and no one will be poor. We will all be the same, and that just... won't work out :dunno

Has no one else read, 'Fahrenheit 451'?

What he is saying if you are poor--it is harder, but, not impossible. Some people don't have to work at it and others do. We shouldn't change it so no one has to work at it at all. Life it isn't fair some have to work and some don't, but if no one works, and works hard, what's the point of living?

Thank you for explaining that to him.

Now, obviously, your tax dollars would be going to fund this. Either directly from your paycheck or otherwise. Here's what I wanna know. Would what you pay in taxes over a lifetime (just for the college plan) actually be more than you would've paid for tuition? I'm thinking "yes".

So. My taxes pay for a fire department that I have never used. Even if my house caught fire and they put it out, my taxes would be hire that the cost of the firefighting.

Same with roads and bridges. I would rather my money go for higher education that some stupid, useless wall between the US and Mexico

But does the tax money you pay to the fire department add up to more than the value of your home? And the surrounding homes that would be lost if the fire was unchecked? Probably not.

You're comparing apples and oranges anyway. Public safety is an obvious necessity. I'm not convinced that free college is a necessity.

Oh, still waiting on your explanation of how the GI Bill is a joke, by the way.

When I got out of the military, the GI Bill was worthless. I would get 160 dollars a month while I was in college. The GI Bill should be resurrected to what it was originally.

When did you get out? The way it's set up right now is if you're a full-time student, you receive $1200 a month regardless of the cost of the school. I took a semester at a community college, and the first month's check paid for the entire tuition and books. The next 2 months I was able to use the money to live off of. That's hardly worthless.
