this has gone so far off topic... lets end it... now..

kthanks

Jersey,
Before you stop the back-and-forth, may I just point out that the thread is about National Anthems, and the subject naturally turned to pride and being proud of one's country. Or not. As the case may be. How is discussing pride as part of that context now off topic? It's completely related to what we were talking about, whether or not one can be proud enough of your country to stand for the anthem or the respect you can show toward another country?

Would there be others who'd be willing to look for the definiton of pride that also includes the concept of being proud in other than self-centered achievements?
Thankyouverymuch.

Pudding Time's OP said:
Do you stand during a foreign national anthem? Do you take your hat off? Do you even sing it? Or do you do nothing?

I'd like to reiterate that I do stand to my own and other's national anthems, I sing to my own but not to others and part of the reason is because of national pride as also shown in this Wikipedia definition.

Pride is an emotion which refers to a strong sense of self-respect, a refusal to be humiliated as well as joy in the accomplishments of oneself or a person, group, nation or object that one identifies with, or to think of one's self as being better than anyone else.

or to think of one's self as being better than anyone else.

This is where I think you get the grey area where nationalism can easily cross over to racism. I like a lot of things about my country, they probably seem best to me but that is because of the culture I've been raised in. A lot of American ideals for instance make no sense whatsoever to me. Are they wrong though? Not necessarily, it's just the way we've been brought up. I really don't see what's so great about American football for instance but who cares? It's just a game! I'm sure a lot of people find English customs weird too, it dosen't mean we have to hate each other for it. I like a bit of banter and piss taking over these differences, it really is nothing nasty, it's just my way of accepting them.
I love my country and I love it so much I can accept where we've gone wrong about important things and wish for change.

So you consider yourself a citizen of the world, rather than an individual country? Okay. I can see that POV, although it's not my perspective.
Cheers, I suppose that's a good way of looking at it :)

On the whole pride thing.... I dunno, I kinda side with AEF, in that I don't see myself in my ancestors' (well, not even mine, but everyone else's ancestors') development of the country. They're not me. On the other hand, I suppose I can be excited about my country achieving something, like Australia getting past the qualifiers in the World Cup a few years back... but that seems more like just having a favourite sporting team than actual national pride. I dunno.

Completely off topic, I stand when other countries are singing their national anthem even if I don't personally like them it doesn't mean I don't like all fo them it's the respectful thing to do..

It's in a way the same thing as if you just did a big performance and only one or two people clapped, they might feel offended..

It's the right thing to do, even if you don't like the people, it's not nice to be rude..

I stand for our national anthem, I also stand for the other country's national anthem. It's a sign of respect for thoe who are visiting us! How would you feel if your sportsmen/women didn't receive the same amount of respect that their fans gave out toyours!!!

I wouldn't care what so ever.
