Even if religious stories and events in history can't be proven to have occurred, at least they provide a foundation for laws to be made.

I don't really know what the afterlife is like.

I am not dead.

The most anyone can go by is mediums who communicate with these souls who have passed onto the 'other side', or personal experiences that have happened to people I know like my mum.

I don't think it really matters that it has to be proven as such, evidence (or no evidence), it's always going to be waffly when it comes to matters of beliefs. Some things prove it, others don't. Some people are open-minded, others are skeptical, it really depends.

At least in a person's life time, their beliefs should make them feel secure, that they are living a decent life (according to whatever) and will rest having accomplished that. Or sometimes people just wanna feel good knowing that after they die, they will be safe.

And I don't think people should try to change other people's either - everyone is an individual, we just have to be tolerant and be open to the different views.

Really?

You would not try to change what is happening here in these links?

You would not try to change these views?

Remember that for evil to grow all good people need do is nothing.

Good for you. Seekers have a chance of finding truth. Believers think their God can be found in a book. Seriously.

Silly right?

Seek out the Godhead and you can find it.

Do not give in to the wishful thinking of those who believe in the fantasy God of scripture.
There is no miracle working absentee God.

Scripture is good for thought but to take them literally is the wrong path and destroys logic.

Yes I believe also but of course your belief is the correct one.. right ?

Amazing...

Amazing...

And your belief is right and all others are wrong.
Right?

We are all fundamentals to our beliefs.

Is yours built on a fantasy God or something else?

If faith without facts is for fools then show that you are not foolish and give some facts.

Not just dogma and hear say please.

Nope..

My belief is right for me..

It is why I don't push my belief on others. each has their own. No one is right and no one is wrong as long as they believe..

The Jesus Camp video hits home the power of indoctrination at a young age. If you are raised in a religious home, most likely you have been indoctrinated. How many of those people actually take an independent look at their existence and are willing to question the established dogma? My guess is a minority.

I hope you are wrong on the numbers that remain so indoctrinated.

Do not get your impressions as to the stupidity of the masses fron the internet because it seems to me that literal readers and fundamentals are over-represented here and that the real world hold more intelligent people than we think.

I hope so anyway.

If not then I have even more enemies to reason than I think I do.

Just remember that for this evil to grow all good men need do is nothing.

Really I hope I'm wrong too...but it is such a strong attraction due to it's simplicity to latch onto the omnipotent father who if you follow his rules, will ensure the party will continue in the next life. The real problem are all the humans who are more that willing to control, manipulate and enrich themselves acting as the go-between between us and the divine. This is the corruption of spirituality imo.

Yes and no. As to God yes. As to churches no. With exceptions to both. Unfortunately things are not black and white.

I agree that it happens but I do recognize the social value of churches in terms of community.

It is the way they show their Gods that I have a problem with.

I see it as wrong to teach people that there are real talking snakes and donkeys and that an absentee God has miracles coming out of His ass but never uses them on earth to help man.

I believe that all deserve the truth and should not be lied to.

You might notice that many churches are taking a more rational view of God and what it means to be religious. Women priest, gay priests etc show that some churches are on the right track.

We have to remember that here is a distortion of what is happening in the real world. Thank God for that, so to speak.

The more open minded and vague they are in their beliefs the better. :) But there are still those people who enrich themselves by manipulating and controlling the flock as God's go between. They act more like snake oil salesmen. And unfortunately most of them are using the Bible as their standard, their book of truth. It's hard to have an honest religion when it could be based on make believe. Notice I said "could". ;)

In answer to the title of this thread,
Yes, and I'm probably one of the most back-sliding (no pun intended) Christians you'll ever know of...

Matthew 17:20
And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

You , so called, believers, should get at it then and help out.

lol, I probably am a hedging-your-bets Christian,
though the duh in me is not sure what that is
if it means that
I am truly wicked and know it and admit it
and half-ass try to correct it once in a while,
while believing in talking snakes and 900 year old people and Jesus and the Immaculate Conception
then, yeah, I am
guess this means my place in heaven might be a cardboard box instead of a castle

Got you beat.

I have always had a criminal mind and a delinquent attitude.
Knock the hell out of plain old wicked.

That does not mean I have to buy into fantasy.

Why did you?

for one, I was raised Catholic
so automatically accepted the Trinity
but in my twenties, I began doubting
because of all the suffering the Lord was sending my way
(and still does)
but then I had my children
they are such beautiful and wonderful gifts
I know they were not created by chance
someone special and wise and intelligent created them and placed them in my womb
(and I'm not talking about their biological father, though he had a hand, I suppose)
and it seems that whenever
I pick up going back to Church
my life picks up too
I find my way out of difficult situations
when I pray, really pray
sometimes those prayers are instantly and magically answered
another thing that makes me believe is the sky
it is so awe-inspiring and breath-takingly beautiful
God must be an artist, showing off
