When I was younger, I was suspected of having Asperger's. My third-grade teacher even suggested putting me in Special Ed, but my mom didn't agree with that. In fact, it's pretty likely I might have it still, but my nature isn't as obsessive and irate anymore like it used to be.

I JUST now saw the posts at the top and feel horrible that I didnt respond :( If anyone needs to know more about autism, all you do is have to ask. Myself, Evan and jersey all know alot about it.. Heck, I think Jersey knows more than all of us since she is a therapist.. Evan and I just experience it first hand since our sons have it. :(

I'd like to know why more children are being diagnosed with this then ever before....is it because we have better diagnostics or is it because our environment is creating more children with these issues.

I'm going through a tough time with my own own son right now...I've paid out loads of money now to actually find something wrong with him so I can say ok hes acting like this because he has this.... I'm wondering if its a separate test that perhaps they have yet to do on him...because he does things and doesn't even think of the consequences. and he is so overly sensitive.... it drives me nuts at times.
just caught this

If there are more that are diagnosed now a days it could be because in the past those with lesser symptoms went undiagnosed. used to be we just accepted kids had issues and dealt with it. now it seems we have to always find the cause such as with kids that have ADD

Now if there truly are more kids with autism then I think you will find it is man induced. My wife was mentioning the other day that there is a belief that so many people have asthma because of taking Tylenol as kids. I forget what the reasoning to suspect that.

People with Autism were often diagnosed as Schizophrenic. Until there were concrete diagnostics for Autism, they were often times treated from schizophrenia, which of course they didnt have.

I didnt know that heather.. Wow.

I know some doctors are linking Austism to the Mercury that is put in booster shots to preserve them.. But, I believe they discredited that.. However I know a big group of people won ALOT of money in a law suit because of this..

I'm now have a one year old in my class that may be autistic (he's being evaluated for a number of things).

Well, he was offically diagnoised last week with autism. He'll actually be moving out of our class by the end of the month since he's just turned two. His mom wanted him to stay in our class until December because he's made a lot of improvement in the short time he's been here but after talking it over, we all agree it'll be better for him to move up with kids his own age.

The thing that really gets me is that the two year old teacher doesn't want him in her class because it'll be too difficult for her. Since he doesn't speak, she worried that the other kids won't use their words or stop listening because he doesn't. The way I look at is that you could always have a child in your class that is autisic, or deaf, or physically impaired. It's not the child's fault so you better come up with a way of making the most out of the time you get to spent with that child, even if it's a bit of an inconcenience and takes more of your time.

I think she'll be amazed how much the other kids learn from this one. I can almost guarantee that the other kids will show an interest in learning sign language so they can communicate with the child. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that either. Kids learn other languages much easier the younger they are because they haven't been using their own language long enough to find it difficult. Children are fascinating at this age because they haven't been "taught" yet that people with special needs are shunned by society. I just hope the parents of the other children don't turn into idiots that their own children will "dumb down" because of the child with Autism.

I'm another one with autism - Asperger's Syndrome, specifically. It certainly makes things interesting, to say the least. :) But, I'm a junior at university and a high school and community college graduate, so I can't complain there. If anyone wonders what it's like for "Aspies" in college, feel free to ask.

It is actually terribly difficult for two Aspies to communicate with each other. Usually neither has the want to initiate conversation and they don't pick up on social cues. I don't understand why they have Aspie groups, when the number 1 issue is social skills :dunno

By age 5, if it were Autism, there would be many more things that would distance him from his peers. It's possible he just has OCD or something mild.

Well, it might be possible he has a mild form of Autism, e.g. Asperger's or something like that.

Jersey: Boy, you've got that right. Conversations I've had with other Aspies are usually hard. Except with my sister, but we know each other pretty well.

We teach sign language to all of our class because it gives them words that they don't have yet. I would love it if I could teach all of the kids at the center a few signs. When he gets upset, the kids come and try to help us comfort him (pat his head, stroke his arms and legs). His mom was telling us that the want to start him with the pictures for communication (I forget what it's called) but they're going to wait until he moves to the next class to start it. I told the two year old teacher that if the other kids ask about him, to tell them that some people need extra helplearning hings and that he is one of them, so they help him with sitting for circle time or help at lunch time.

i feel bad for the kids who are judged because they have autism... like people think they are slow or something.... because i have very close autistic family memembers and friends siblings and they all do AMAZING things, and some i personally think are geniuses. i love them, and it breaks my heart when i see them having a hard time

i think im lucky

two of my family members has it quite bad, one cant speak very well and doesnt understand the world around him at all but he also has the added complication of epilespy, which is hell for him and not controlled :(

people just see me as quirky, obsessed and abit unsocialible in RL, hence why i join forums :24:
