Re: Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at

Here's an interesting quote from the link Pudding Time posted:

This is where we've arrived in this country: You have the constitutional right to burn an American flag, but you can get into trouble for simply flying a foreign one.

Ironic? Here's another really good one:

What gives someone the right to wave a foreign flag anyway? Answer: The First Amendment. Bans like the one in Pahrump are almost certainly unlawful and unconstitutional

And the final quote, probably the best one:

At moments like this, I barely recognize my own country. Americans confronted slavery, the Great Depression, the Third Reich, and racial injustice here at home. Now some of us tremble at the sight of a piece of cloth. How sad.

That's pretty much all I have to say.

When you live in American your allegiance should be to America as American laws are the ones you are living under. Allegiance to Australia and Australia laws while living in America is wrong imo. This is what many people do and then they wonder why American citizens don't want them here ... it is because they refuse to assimilate.

That's just wrong. Why the hell should anybody have to conform to our standards to be accepted? Would you want to be forced to speak Spanish and wear Spanish clothes and eat only Spanish food and fly their flag above the US flag if you went to Spain?

I could be wrong but....

....isn't it a requisite for persons applying for citizenship upon acceptance to pledge allegiance to the US of A?

All I know is, if they like their old country so damn much, why'd they leave?

I would assume not, it's not a law to say the pledge of allegiance. :ninja

It shouldn't matter if they show loyalty to two countries. They are just showing that they are proud of both the country they came from and the one they live in. You won't die if somebody shows loyalty to two countries, it's not like they're bombing us.

My opinion:

We all need to accept multiculturalism, eventually the world will have too. So why not get ahead of the game, the US seems to be ahead in a lot of aspects. You can't change what is going to happen, thinking "purely" American isn't an option anymore, we have become a country that has so many dimensions... We have to accept change sooner or later.

How can I become an American Citizen?

American citizenship can be achieved two different ways. If you were born on American soil, you will be considered a United States citizen. Another way to achieve citizenship, if you were born elsewhere, is naturalization. "What's that", you say. Well naturalization is a process in which there are three steps. If you are looking to gain citizenship through naturalization, you will have to start by filing an application. As well, you will have to take an exam called the naturalization exam. Lastly you will also need to appear for a court hearing.

There are a few requirements also, before you can be naturalized into United States citizenship.
• You must be at least 18 years of age.
• You must have lived as a legal resident in the United States for at least 5 years.
• You have to be loyal to the U.S.
• You need to be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
• You need to have a basic knowledge of the history, government structure, and the Constitution of the United States of America.
• You also have to be willing to take an oath of allegiance to the U.S.

Never heard of refugees or something, or people moving because of work?

Agreed, and rep'd. I think I have a good analogy for this one. See, I like Dr. Pepper, and I like Coke. Now, I've always been the most loyal to Dr. Pepper, but that doesn't mean I'm a bad person for showing loyalty to Coke as well. Or is it wrong to be a hyphenated beverage lover?

Of course, if I'm planning to become a citizen of Spain. Shouldn't be any other way.

Oh, the loopholes. It says loyalty and allegiance to the U.S., but does it say, "Only loyalty and allegiance to the U.S."? I think not.

Indeed!
I wouldn't say the US has to adapt but more along the lines of keeping an open mind. immigrants are not coming here with the mind set of fucking the economy, nor the jobs, culture that is already in place... they are coming here for the opportunities that are available.

Now, how some of them go about it is a different issue, but nobody HAS to adapt in order for things to work, just learn to have an open mind when it comes to cultures and ideas.

Yes, you are a bad person for not showing loyalty to coke. :ninja

If you read that letter that Tim posted, it makes no sense. "The only good American is one that isn't a hyphenated American". That's bullshit. So, what, if you're not American, you're a bad person? That's fair. :smiley24:

Physically yes it is just a piece of cloth, but symbolically it's more than that. It's a symbol of our country.

I have all the tolerance in the world for dual citizenships. Why should one man give up his nationality, geneology, and heritage because he wanted to come to America to start a better life? Just because you want more opportunities doesn't mean you have to blow off your past and ancestry.
