So...I'm going to be moving to a new apartment and I need to give written notice to my current landlords that I'll be moving out. Any advice on how to word it? Do I just keep it simple or make it really formal?

:D

To Whom it May Concern: (property management company or landlord)

Please accept this as formal notice that I will be vacating....(address) on....(date).

Sign and date.

Nothing else is needed. Not sure what the law is there....here it's 3 months' notice that's required on a month to month lease and 2 from the termination date on a yearly lease.

I asked my landlord last week and was told they require a month's notice. I don't even know if my lease is month-to-month or yearly or what. I signed a lease when I moved in here 3 years ago and I've never signed anything since. An older couple owns my building and a few others. It's not a corporation or anything so things haven't been nearly as formal.

The law here is that you sign the first year's lease and then it goes to a month to month for any remaining years if you don't sign another.

I'd say just make sure you date it and make sure it's received in time....deliver by hand, if you can.

Exactly...no explanation is necessary. It's the termination of a contract, that's it. Date and sign...buh bye.

True dat. I'm just terrible at wording these things. It took me forever to write up my notice when I quit my last job too. blush.png

I know the feeling but I worked in property management for YEARS, keep it brief and to the point and make sure the submission date and the termination date is clear, just in case...."cover thy ass" is rule #1, even if you anticipate no problems.

First, I"d ask for a copy of your lease, so you have an idea of what sort of closing fees you might need to take care of. Then :

To whom it may concern in management,

I, Secret agent/ninja Zirc, hereby give you (insert Landlord's name & appartment) that I will no longer be paying rent or residing in (insert appartment name) after (insert date). Please contact me if you need anymore information reguarding my termination of lease.
