I am also anal so I had to change all the drive letters so they are in alphabetical order, and I name them for the international radio alphabet; that is, c drive is charlie, d drive is delta, etc.

He didn't lead me, illegal alien, he found the drivers and nuker I needed. You have to remember that I have been nuking computers for a long time. :p

This is another tid-bit: If you have XP professional you cannot upgrade it to Vista home premium. Fuckin' Micro$hit! :mad

I like XP

I was happy when i got this laptop earlier this year that XP was available.

Instead of MS making new OS they should just tweak XP and make it secure

That's what never made sense to me. Why not just sell proper upgrades to existing OS's rather than making it obsolete by issuing a new and bug-ridden OS? Our company just upgraded their computers- and they have lots! - so they are not about to invest in Vista when it's not even compatible with their hardware.

they should treat OS like medicine. after a time your patent expires and one can make generics. then companies could provide the continuation of tweaks when MS decides time is out.

The reason they do it is to create new sales. Many people would choose to keep XP when they upgrade their computer, but they cannot (unless they build themselves). They are forced to pay for another license for another OS.
Also, people who choose to stay with the older OS are soon "obsoleted" out of the market and forced to upgrade to take advantage of new software or upgraded software.

I understand the concept Chris but what I am meaning is, Windows OS's operate on basically the same shell and verfy similar kernels every since GUI's came out. I'm no computer engineer or programmer but I don't think it is unrealistic to actually develop modules similar to service packs that add to the original kernel or shell and be sold as a package.

I loved W2K. I ran it for nearly 6 years so why should I be forced to replace it with XP merely to increase MicroSoft's bottom line? I would have been a much happier customer if they offered the module I proposed that simply upgraded my system. If you think about it, W98 wasn't anything more than a W95 upgrade but the change from 98 to 2000 and from XP to Vista were fundamental changes.

I found a nice little app that changes icons. I got this thing so trimmed, hacked and on classic view I feel like I'm on W98se! :D:thumbup

This is the app for changing icons: ActivIcons: Change Windows folder and system icons, make text background transparent, save and restore icon layout, etc.

As far as trimming is concerned for appearance I just use classic views with everything; for performance you should disable services. If you don't know how black viper is a good place to start. I am a good place for online guidance. Killing services is something I have done dozens of time.

I also like a clean, bare-bones computer. I have only 4 icons on my desktop. When it comes to accessing drives, I have buttons on my quick launch bar so I can directly access any drive. I have 9 usuable hard drive logical drives so I have lettered buttons made up. I'll post a screenshot of my desktop then one of a drive so you can see what it looks like (sorry for the size if you are looking at a small monitor):
