Win all my tokenz!!!

Yes, folks! all you have to do is give me a sucessful solution to my problem:

- I have a Gateway GM5457E computer with Vista, which I hate.

- I want to install XP.

- I can't find drivers to get the XP installation to recognize my SATA drives.

I have tried so many different solutions and drivers I can't list them all here. So, the deal is, if anybody can help me get XP installed, all my tokenz are his/hers. I will not accept other solutions such as get another computer, get a new mobo or try Linux.

Thanks for the link but it is for an Acer laptop specifically so won't be any good for my desktop Gateway. Also, the grammar is terrible! I do have an external USB floppy drive by the way.

You want the Intel Matrix Storage Manager and I believe you have the Intell 945G Chipset, at least from what I can tell from the product specifications:

https://support.gateway.com/s/PC/R/1009491/1009491sp3.shtml

Go here:

Intel® 945 Express Chipset Family - Chipset information and downloads

Follow the download link above and choose your OS and look at the "readme" file -- you'll need to install this during the Windows Installation procedure--it will prompt you to hit "F6" to install a driver. Skip down in the installation instructions in the Readme file to the "F6" method since you will need to get these drivers on a floppy.

You will also need AHCI mode enabled in your BIOS although I assume it already is enabled since it came with SATA drives with Vista.

And don't worry about the name "RAID" -- you can choose to run a RAID configuration but don't need to--the Matrix Manager is still necessary -- also download the software which you install later after Windows is isntalled.

Now give me my tokenz! ;)

BTW--I had to do this same thing when I switched to SATA drives--XP didn't recognize the hard drives, which is why there is the "F6" floppy drive method for installing drivers that are not included with Windows but are necessary for installation of the OS. Its a bit confusing so if you have any questions feel free to ask. The nice thing is you can't screw up because you are installing the OS new.

Ok Chris, I am familiar with the F6 option as I have tried several drivers to install at that point and none have worked. I also have drivers slipstreamed into a copy of XP to skip the F6 stage of installation but that also did not work.

I will try the link you gave me and see if those drivers will work. I bought the USB external floppy drive specifically for this function.

I will let you know how things work out. Thanks for the links. I am quite good with OS's but not so good with search engines! :(

Dammit Mulder, I Wanted Those Tokenz Even Though My Solution Was Perfect!!!!

No it wasn't--mine is--its exactly the solution actually.

And actually, I am not sure if its needed with XP, SP-3.

You know Lumpy you can slipstream an SP CD that already includes SP-3--that's what I'd do rather than doing the upgrade.

Exactly! XP and W2K were developed before SATA drives were widely used so they were never designed to recognize the newer drives. I had the same problem with my old computer when I got it. It came with a SATA drive and I never could get my W2K installed on it. Luckily it also had an IDE bus and I installed the OS on an old IDE drive. The only IDE bus on this rig is being used by the DVD drive.

Thanks Chris but it's not confusing. It's just a matter of getting the right drivers installed at the F6 prompt.

Oops! My post leapfrogged your's.

I never had SP3 with XP because up until I got this computer and Vista I was still using W2K, still my OS of choice. I don't even know if a SP3 download is still available. I will do a search...

Well its a bit more than that because you do need to have the BIOS set properly and then you need to create the floppy and also install the software afterwards. But that is clearly your problem and it should work unless Gateway has listed the wrong Chipset manufacturer and model for your machine.

The download from the link you gave me is an .exe file so I don't know how it's supposed to load onto a floppy. I clicked it, started an installation screen then it stopped and said my system wasn't up to snuf to run it.

I tried to use the Intel chipset indentifier but it errored and prompted me to update it. That also failed. I used the old Everest utility and it came up with chipset unknown.

Its the right files--but you need to extract them into a folder rather than install it. Let me see if I can find how to do it.
