vs black pride ... is there a difference ?

It always seems to be ok to have black pride, but when someone says white pride…it automatically makes him or her a racist. Is there really a difference in the two?

I posted this elsewhere and it got closed, sooooooo :ninja

There are negative connotations associated with "White Pride" due in no small part to the Nazis. "Black Pride" doesn't have any such strong negative connotations. Not saying they don't exist - just not anything on the scale of the Nazis.

Everything else follows on from that.

I don't know, I'm not 'proud' to be white exactly. Yes it's part of who I am, but it'd be like being proud that I have brown eyes. It's not something I earned, I was just born that way.

As far as I know, the point of things like 'Black Pride' are because for a long time everyone was told being black was like being second class. It was something to be ashamed of. So I imagine the idea of the emphasis on black pride is to try and rebalance that thinking to be more equal.

Whether or not it's still relevant is another matter.

Both are bad in my books because they presume racial superiority, if only fleetingly and especially if the participants don't realise it.

I see it similar to you, I am proud of my culture, but care less about my colour lol, I feel we should all move on from the past, forgive and forget and if its alright for the term "black" to be used then so is "white" or where is the progress if one is labelled racist but not the other.

both of those terms are negative and both incite hatred. i am tired of one race thinking they are better or superior than another. i am also tired of one race talking about stuff that happened many many many years ago. have we not moved on? have we as a people not evolved? i know a few people that if you say anything in disagreement with them then "you are racist and hate black people." i dont hate anyone, first off, and second i dont agree with stupid or ignorant thoughts, no matter what your color is

I'm more proud of what I and my immediants have achieved rather than someone who happens to be the same colour as myself. I can admire what people do, but I don't feel pride, it wasn't my achievement.

Omg me too, I am also sick of simple words and terminologys been twisted to make people racist, or predjudiced, when the intention is innocent I have two sons one is aboriginal one is white and I have witnessed racism to us from BOTH sides. As for moving on that also pisses me off, whites have paid compo, said sorry, given land etc and in return where is the forgiveness ?? some parts of oz my black son can go but not my white son.. now that is ridiculous and draws bitterness not unity. Especially when I didnt enslave anyone and most alive today were not affected anyway, dead and gone imo past is over.

this, along with gay pride, black pride has nothing to do with superiority but everything to do with equality, blacks and gays dont think they are better than anyone, they think they are cool being who they are, and for the longest time even privately acknowledging such would get them into a lot of trouble That inmo is the essence of pride, so i ask what do whites have to be proud about in that context

If its to do with equality .. then it shouldnt still offend people if whites or straights use the term, afterall thats true equality isnt it ? And there are just as many racist blacks as white who think they are better then others, thats ignorance to assume its one sided.

in my opinion when blacks, gays, uuse the pride label it says equality because they have a need to - because for a long time they have faced prejudice, sure a white straight guy can be proud of who he is but no-one is going to listen, he belongs to the dominant group that largely was responsible for the prejudice

but at what point will the prejudice stop? as long as people keep using labels to promote their equality they will never really become equal....all they are doing is seperating theirselves

So again, for no other reason than what, where or how they were born - a group of people is somehow "less entitled" to something. Only this time it's straight white men.

Interesting and ironic.

I dont see it that way i dont see black pride as being anything other than a recognition of equality, not a separation -

less entitled to what ? their own pride? there is nothing in what i have said ( i hope) that suggests that white folk are not entitled to pride, rather i dont think they need to show pride in the same way that blacks and gays do, which is because of previous prejudice

But what if these pride movements and groups stopped....would the next generation just look at everyone as equals or would the prejudice return?

I wouldn't associate myself with all other white people as a group that have been discriminated against so I don't have a feeling of "white Pride" Plus there's already a celebration of "Irish Pride" on St. Patricks Day.

This makes sense. What good could possibly come from any of these "Pride" movements in the end? Of course, this is the way I see it being primarily caucasion myself. I have no clue what it feels like to be black or brown in a white majority society. If i were black or brown, I might well view this discussion quite differently.
