I try to consider a situation through both before making an important decision, but I tend to use my brain first.

I would have to say a good mix of both, my first instinct is to use logic, then my heart steps in and I look at it from both angles.

Normally, it's a struggle.

I would just like to ask, how can anyone even think of letting their feelings rule them? It's entirely outside logic, and how can you deny logic? It just doesn't make sense to me. Your logic is the thing which keeps you alive, and which promotes your long run welfare. Your feelings are primeval half-thoughts that carry no reasoning in them. How can you let those rule you?

Maturity, age seems to make you a little slower at letting JUST logic control you.....just because it is logical, doesn't mean it's the right thing to do.

Can you name an instance where this is true?

I am strapped with a position that requires me to make decisions that can affect thousands of people, one pen stroke can potentially change the lives of a lot of employee's. Ethics and logic are two very different terms, that's because ethics and integrity requires more than thought....It requires character.

So I do a lot of soul searching before I make rash decisions, and if you want an instance, well it happens every day I am at work.

When I was younger, I ran strictly by my business sense and nothing else. I have found much more internal and external sucess simply by not flying by the seat of my pants, that's not effective management of people.

I suggest you read "The Virtue of Selfishness" by Ayn Rand. It shows how morality and logic are inseparable. You cannot be moral (objectivistley moral) without logic. When you're about to sign that paper, think about what's going to bring in more profit. That's logic, and it's moral.

I probably have initial reactions based on emotion. But then I always have to use logic to assess what I am feeling. As has been mentioned, it's a constant struggle, as oftentimes the 2 sides are in opposition.
I think Carthage asked how a person can allow emotions to rule. It's because people are human, d00d. How can you NOT feel about some things enough to allow it to sway you.

Living Logically. I refuse to let half-baked emotions override the reason that I let run my life.

What I mean is, and it should be real clear, is it's important to manage both, it's an internal check and balance.

And I appreciate you offering advice on how to run my company:D

to this point I have done a pretty good job though;)

Of course you have. If not, would you still be running it?
Oh, and I meant no offense. I wasn't really trying to give advice, just saying how a computer like me would make that decision.

Always with my brain. If you let your heart rule before your brain it always gets trampled.

I didn't take it personal at all bud.

But when I was simply a staff engineer, my job was easy, you brought me a problem, and numbers won....everytime.

Managing people, that takes a different tack, corporate selfishness is the problem with lage corporations now.

People need to be treated with a little more than logic. It's not supernatural.

And I suggest you read The Art of War:D

I do not advocate letting emotions rule your life. But they certainly should have a place. Emotions are where the beautiful displays of compassion and forgiveness and empathy come from. There is always a place for those in your life, even though logic may tell you to not forgive or to not be helpful or to not put yourself in another's shoes.

That I disagree with. Logic tells you that this person is/is not worthy of compassion or empathy. Therefore, you give them compassion or empathy based on weather or not they have earned it. Logic also compels you to put yourself in another's shoes more then feelings. Logic says that "You are not this person. Therefore, yo u cannot understand this person without trying to see things from their point of view." Now, as long as your rational, you can look at the situation from another's point of view and explain to them why they are wrong (assuming you used logic when you first made your judgment). Logic often tells you to be helpful too; in most cases, helping another gives you a return in the future. Logic and trade are also allies. Displays of empathy, passion, forgiveness, are only beautiful if they are logical.
