That's not true.. We are far more educated now than ever before..
Maybe that's why fewer and fewer people can spell, much less use proper English? Perhaps that's why fewer and fewer can do simple math without a calculator? Tell that line to college professors who end up having to teach incoming freshmen skills they should have learned in high school. I'd recommend the book, "The Deliberate Dumbing Down of America," by Charlotte Iserbyt. It's available free in PDF form from the author's website. It does have a conservative slant but raises good points. Mine is that kids are under assault from the far right and left, more money is spent now on them then ever and they know far less than when I graduated.

Some values/elements I'd like to see more often:
Respect
Patience
Education
Socially rewarded honesty, intelligence, fairness
Socially sanctioned stupidity, anti-social behaviors
Without a doubt actual separation of church and state. It's unfair to everyone.

Basically I think in the US at least the society has too much rudeness, impatience, a love of stupidity and bad behaviors, an ill-conceived attempt to protect people (children, minorities, seniors) that actually DOESN'T help them at all and drives us all apart.

Television is sickening, really. I can't stand our celebrity worship.

Panacea .... I think you summed it up PERFECTLY! Every one of those items you mentioned is VERY low in the United States.
