What would improve our society?

A simply one for me, I think society would be better off if we worried less about controlling others and remained more concerned with bettering ourselves
Truth. I remember seeing a quote somewhere that said "We always thing of ways to change others and never think of changing ourselves." If people focused on changing themselves then society itself would be changed. The first step to a better society is a better you.

Education is just a mirror of what society's become. People expect something for nothing. The self-esteem administrators seem so gung-ho on making sure kids have used to be something that was earned by being able to learn and apply the material. Now most of the material that worked to teach kids the basics is gone from the schools, along with discipline. So what do you expect that we're turning out a bunch of undisciplined wankers with a collective sense of entitlement?

I think you're right. It might boil down to critical thinking. We don't teach it, at least not in my area. Kids want the answer, and teachers spoon feed it to them. When I answer a question with a question, which is how teachers always responded to me, my students typically just get frustrated - at least until they get used to me.

That's not true.. We are far more educated now than ever before..

The problem is most educators ( teachers ) include their bias in most subjects.. If one could not just the knowledge in computers and have the kids learn the "facts" only it may give them a different perspective but unfortunately they would have no social skills..

It is a hard challenge to teach your children the facts and knowledge without bias.. One few humans can accomplish.. :p

Facts are not enough. One has to know how to use the facts. Learning to think is more important than learning facts. You can get facts on your own.

Facts and ideas are totally different.. Thinking is something you encourage not discourage.. :)

Thinking is also something you teach. The brain is a muscle and needs exercise to become strong. Ideas are not enough. People also need critical thinking skills to assess whether an idea presented to them is a truly good idea or simply presented well. Facts of history, for instance, are pointless without also understanding the relationships and interaction of those facts, the results they produced, and having the skills to judge the quality of those results and theorize how a different result might have been produced.

Kakapo said the same thing, except he was more succinct and interesting than I.
