I can see if you're a hunter, soldier, or law enforcer... but owning a gun just to have one? do they make people feel safer? does it lead to agressive release?

To answer your question. I own one hand gun. I dont have it for protection. I have it, because it is a fun stress reliever. I like to target shoot.

the 3 things that you named I assure you have weapons for work and their hobbies and also for protection.

If there is a senerio where a man comes into my home with a weapon or any threat of my life or my sons...you bet your ass I'm going to want that 9mm in my hand to put a bullet in his head.

and there's no jury in the world that would convict a 5'1'' 100lb mother alone at home trying to defend herself and her son

When I go to work today Dana. You better believe I will have a 9mm holstered on my side and a 12 guage shotgun in the gun rack next to me. But that is my job.

I have nothing against guns personally... If I wasn't accident prone I might be inclined to shoot one.

i love the dumbasses who keep guns in their house to stay safe then keep them unloaded with the bullets hidden. if you have children, do whatever you can to make sure they cannot physicall get to it.

Guns are cool, but I'm glad we've got strict gun controls over here.
It's too late for America, they're in a cycle where people need a gun just to protect themselves from all the other people with guns.

I can only give you my reasons.

I like to target shoot. Its a great test of my physical concentration and control.

I have them for defense of my family, home and self.

Being an engineer, I'm inherently interested in the mechanical workings of firearms.

I'm also interested in their historical value which is why I collect some of the weapons I do.

Uhh not in the least. Firearms are simply the great equalizer between the average citizen and your typical thug.

Think of it this way, there's a reason that competitions between highly trained martial artists have weight classes. Thats because even when people are highly trained in the martial arts, the bigger person has an inherent advantage. That advantage grows when you're talking about people who are untrained.

If I, the scrawny engineer, come across brawny joe thuggin unarmed, I'm fucked. I am very likely to die whether he's armed or not simply due to size/strength disparity.

If I'm armed with a firearm, worst case scenario is that I have an even chance should he be armed with a firearms as well. I like those odds compared to always being at a disadvantage.

As the old saying goes, God made man, Samual Colt made them equal.

Well, the rest of the civilised world survives just fine so I don't buy that.

Buy it nor not, it is what it is. Go pick a fight with someone twice your size and let me know how it goes if you really don't believe it. Course that might let reality get in the way of beliefs and we couldn't let that happen could we....

If you wanna be a bunch of defenseless sheep thats fine but don't call us uncivilized for choosing to be armed and take responsibility for our own safety and well being.

I didn't actually call you uncivilised, sorry if it appeared that way. I was making a distinction between the US and other countries where gun control is minimal, like Somalia.

Canadians spent.... well wasted billions on gun control, would rather do what the states do.... although we're not that way

My misunderstanding then. No worries. :D

to me a gun is a device for protecting my home and wife. It's always locked with a trigger guard in a safe an unloaded. Not everyone that owns a gun is a felon.

Personally, if I want to shoot the shit out of something, X Box games work fine and there's no chance of accidently killing someone innocent with them either, but, hey, you're Americans and its your right to own guns, dosen't really concern me, just dont bitch when you have yet another killing because they were too easy for screw ups to get hold of.;)

I had this debate in another forum about the right to bear arms. It's an interesting one, things are so different on this topic over here in Europe.

The conclusions drawn was that it was far easier for criminals to get hold of weapons in the US, so it's kind of understandable that citizens wish to own a gun to protect themselves and their families.
