The American flag stands for the fact that cloth can be very important. It is against the law to let the flag touch the ground or to leave the flag flying when the weather is bad. The flag has to be treated with respect. You can tell just how important this cloth is because when you compare it to people, it gets much better treatment. Nobody cares if a homeless person touches the ground. A homeless person can lie all over the ground all night long without anyone picking him up, folding him neatly and sheltering him from the rain. School children have to pledge loyalty to this piece of cloth every morning. No one has to pledge loyalty to justice and equality and human decency. No one has to promise that people will get a fair wage, or enough food to eat, or affordable medicine, or clean water, or air free of harmful chemicals. But we all have to promise to love a rectangle of red, white, and blue cloth. Betsy Ross would be quite surprised to see how successful her creation has become. But Thomas Jefferson would be disappointed to see how little of the flag's real meaning remains. Charlotte Aldebron, 12, wrote this essay for a competition in her 6th grade English class. She attended Cunningham Middle School in Presque Isle, Maine.

Too true! I respect other peoples flags to a certain extent but this is the kind of stuff that I don't get, it really seems like mixed up priorities to me.

but seriously bacon, i have nothing against you, I'm sure you're a great guy, and you just feel strongly about what you believe in, and so do I, so we are naturally going to butt heads. No hard feeling son this end.

What they are doing isn't harassing, though. As much as they disgust me, I don't think it counts as harassment if they are thousands of miles away. Now, if they were following troops around constantly and doing what they are doing, THEN it would be considered harassment.

Don't be fooled, Iraq isn't about preserving our freedoms, at all. Its for resources and a permanent military presents in the middle east.

Sorry for the late reply, but just because they are away fighting for us does nt mean we are not harassing them. the fact that they are hundreds of miles away makes it worse

Obviously we all make sense here, people are right i thinking that Americans have the right to believe what they do and also it is not right for our troops to suffer for being troops. I have nothing against any of you at all, and it is nice to hear opposition with some valid points.

From the wikipedia entry someone posted:

For example, the flag should never be dipped to any person or thing, unless it is the ensign responding to a salute from a ship of a foreign nation. (This tradition comes from the 1908 Summer Olympics in London, where countries were asked to dip their flag to King Edward VII: the American team captain Martin Sheridan refused, famously proclaiming that "this flag dips to no earthly king.

Got to love this bit of the American flag tradition. I'd love to know how I would be being disrespectful by dipping an American flag in the USA if I chose to seeing this tradition started by someone disrespecting my King and our traditions in our country?
LMFAO!
