First of all there is no " OR " in the title. Secondly, religion is a very controversial subject and one shouldn't start a thread unless he's prepared to speak his piece. If one does start a thread without making his position clear then he's just another fucking troll.

Secondly, what's the point in a discussion forum if one isn't prepared to discuss a subject they post about. What a boring place this would be if all people did was post an article and moved on. Matter of fact it is quite boring when people speak for others if you know what I mean.

I as well as others in the free world have proven it by posting our response. By mazHur avoiding the issue he has spoken his piece as well. It takes a hell of a lot of guts to post positive outlooks on such a controversial subject.

Lol the title is philosophy and debate, for topics under philosophy, and under debate, or both. Not just for topics under both. That's obvious.

No one says you have to. That's just something YOU want, but frankly, it's something some people don't give a shit about. I'm sure in time he'll post his view if people would actually debate properly  Trust me, I study this at university and I've picked out countless flaws in so many 'debates' on here it's not funny. Not to mention I study psychology which means it's likely I can pick out biases in your behaviour more likely than you can pick it out in yourself.

There's no rule saying that the discussion has to lead down from the original poster's point of view. You know, maybe he's just posting something because it's interesting and for everyone else to discuss. Just sayin'...be open-minded. Not everything is about "He has to.."; "What's the point of..". I think you're all just looking for things so you can call him a troll. Typical human nature.

I study Logic, not Sharia Law  But hey if you want to get technical, I'm learning Arabic too. Which I think is very clever and cool ;)
Logic is being open-minded and accepting both sides.
Yes I would hate to have my hands amputated off, but at the same time you gotta admit, how effective would that punishment be :D :D
Oh and umm:
Studying does not equal supporting something. For all you know, I could disagree with a lot of things I study at university.

If you've read you will recall the British ruled India for more than a century quitting it
in 1947. If people read their impressions about a muti-cultural , multi-religious and
multi-lingual region like India they would come to realize how amazing it is to
live among people there...!!

For one I may recommend those interested in serious topics to read 'Tales from the Raj '
which provides frank observations and comments
of the British about people they ruled.

I've not read it.

"Armies of the Raj" by Byron Farwell is what I have read on the subject, it details yes the good multiculturalism that happened at first, but later the subjugation and general ignorance (I think chiefly of the cause of the Sepoy revolt, Pig\cow fat greased cartridges for muskets). It contains a lot of the correspondence between the top brass in the Raj, and the general consensus seemed to be the natives were 'niggers.' The sikh's might have been "true to their salt" in battle but that's about far as it went.

well, there are many books available on the subject written by Westerners who lived
(or even died) there...
One good reading, for instance, could be The Fall and Decline of The Roman Empire by Gibbons.
You may ask our intellectual Kimmy to supply you with some good
reading stuff on India...I bet she must be having it !:)

Just because they defend you doesn't mean they're an intellectual.
Frankly, I think it's more a sign of ignorance.

Still waiting for your input.

I am an intellectual god damn it!! :D
Kidding :p

I don't think by me defending him he thinks I am an intellectual, he thinks I am an intellectual because I actually am intelligent, in some way at least, in one area, maybe more so than others, LOL.

Shame on you for accusing me of what I am not!!
Behave or buzz off!!

You have NO question to debate about. Someone just calling Sharia as draconian etc
is NOT enough and doesn't arrant any response.

What response?? You have no case, no leg to stand upon!!

Kimmy I take you as an Intellectual because you are a good judge of human behavior,
knowledgeable, unprejudiced, fair and honest.
Please do correct me if I go wrong somewhere....or trip:)

Yeah I wonder why he's gone missing from here  There's only so long one person can tolerate the ignorant attitudes of 'debaters' on here. Not naming names...I'm just being helpful trying to correct some of you all. Hey, I think I have some pretty good insight, but you all just like to dismiss it because you all don't want to be proven wrong or flawed.

I will. But first I would like to eradicate this stupid perception people have of you of being a troll. It's all groupthink in my opinion.
Oh and thank you by the way, I appreciate your acknowledgment :)

sorry , my bad, I thought addressing someone as a boy when
he acts like a boy was a matter of esteem for
the addressee!
it is certinaly not a matter of esteem for the addressee. His post was his opinion and frankly the opinion of many in the west it doe snot mean he was acting like a boy. You above all know that the western media sometimes portrays negative aspects of Islam and the anti Sharia stance is well documented, skyblues reaction can come as no surprise. I agree discussion on religious affairs can be educational and the BBC link you provided seems fair and balanced.

I agree, Muslims are portrayed in negative ways in the media, and because of that people blame the whole Muslim population for terrorism. Kinda unfair.

There is no harm in portraying negative aspects of Islam or anything but the
portrayal should rest on reason. Just flinging swear words such as 'draconian', 'shit', 'crap' ,etc etc
(which is what some Islamophobes do in here )are not a sign of grown ups
nor called for in any serious discussion.

i think the main bone of contention in the west is the suggestion that somehow Sharia Lawa has a place in the west, as you have suggested exposure to Sharia and it's "extreme" punishments might be totally OK to those raised somewhere like Saudi Arabia. The issue that to my mind seems to raise the hackles is when there is the suggestion of implementation of Sharia law in places like the UK. Of course in many cases i suspect such suggestion is word spin by the media, oft mis quoting clerics who simply state they would like to live by their own code.....Law is at the end of the day Law and changing Laws does not happen because any given religious leader says it should happen, least not in wester democracies anyhow, so my bottom line is that those that fear this really have little to fear
