It appears the autopsy report shows gun fired from an "intermediate" range. http://usnews.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2...e-autopsy-shows?chromedomain=openchannel&lite I've read several forensics sites. There is a lot of disparity in what defines "intermediate". I've read the closest distance for "intermediate" is as close as 10 mm and as far as 4ft.
An intermediate range gunshot, like that seen in the above image, can range from just beyond the 12-inch range out to 24 to 36 inches. http://www.firearmsid.com/A_distanceResults.htm
According to this source, "For handguns, powder tattooing begins at a muzzle-target distance of approximately 10 mm." pg 71 Gunshot Wounds: Practical Aspects of Firearms, Ballistics, and Forensic Techniques (2nd edition 1999)
This site has distances classified as contact, near-contact,intermediate or distant. http://www.relentlessdefense.com/our-team/
Intermediate-range gunshot wounds are inflicted at a distance from 1 cm to 4 ft and characteristically are associated with tattooing from burned and unburned gunpowder imbedded in the skin. http://atlas-emergency-medicine.org.ua/ch.17.htm
Some sources seem to use "near contact" and "intermediate" interchangeably.
