Over the past 40 years that I have debated religion I have noticed a progressive change in Christian thinking regarding the Bible. 40 years ago you wouldn't have found many Christians who didn't believe that the Bible was the literal "Word" of their god." Over the years this has changed. There are, of course, still litaralist but many Christians today claim that the Bible contains some things that are true whereas other things are metaphor or allegory. I have even met Christians who think that MOST of the Bible is allegory and metaphor. This thinking has led to an explosion of different denominations of Christianity (38,000 by some estimates).

So what do Christians here think ? Is the Bible the infallible, unchanging, unchangeable 'Word' of your god or is some of it/most of it metaphor and allegory? If you think the latter....how do you decide which is which?

My own opinion is that the Bible is a collection of re-hashed stories that evolved from religions that preceded Christianity.

The only religion I've come across who take everything the Bible says literally is Jehovahs Witnesses, and look how fucked up they are!

Personally, I'm very interested in history. If you are researching history, something might not be fact but it may be. That's the way I view the Bible.;)

They arent as fucked up as you think. They do a couple things different, and the whole reason why they go door to door is odd, but all in all not that bad.

My ex's mom is a JW. She explained a lot of their "beliefs" to me, and ive got a different view of them now.

Ahh... so you've seen the ins and outs of it then.

My ex's mom tried to get me to go to what they called "meeting" but i always politely declined. Knowing a bit about it was enough. Now way in hell i was going to one of their gatherings:ninja

It has already been shown that the bible is a collection of stories that have mostly been rehashed to fit the political & religious views of the times. There were many books included in many different versions of the bible until it was decided in 90 AD which books would form the official bible.

I think that catholics are more screwed up than witnesses. At least the JW's have pretty much stuck to their guns from the beginning, whereas the catholics change their mind every couple of hundred years. It took them 400 years to accept that the universe does not revolve around the Earth, but they had to persecute everyone who said differently for the past millenia. They eat Christ, can commit any number of sins, provided they show true contrition & confess.

Not true, the JW's are constantly changing their mind about stuff under the pretense of it being a "new understanding". At one point they used to celebrate birthdays and Christmas and even stuck up a Christmas tree at their headquarters every year. I t was only as recently as 30 odd years ago that they let you smoke whereas now you get excommunicated for it.

Yes, the Bible is the literal Word of God inspired by the Holy Spirit. Does this mean that mistakes were not made in the Bible? No, of course it doesn't. But human mistakes do not change the overall 'Message' of God's Word. There are no mistakes made that change the overall message and anything focused on in that fashion is in guise of the Devil to purposely cause divisiveness.

The Bible is made up of history, poetry, prophesy, letters, and epistles which are instructions. Many people that claim to be Christians haven't even read the Bible. And many that aren't Christians and claim to have read the Bible are not reading it to seek the Lord. The Holy Spirit divinely reveals the Word. I can read one thing when I am twenty and then read the same thing when I am 50 and it will speak to me in different ways yet still convey the same truth/message from God. That is divine that the Word knows exactly what needs to be spoken into my life at just the right time to help me in just the right way.

I don't feel the Word of God controls me; quite the contrary ... it sets me free.

I know not everyone will understand that, but that is what my personal experience has been.

Can't say I disagree with him either!

Yes, human writers make mistakes. Human writers who are allegedly writing under the inspiration of gods shouldn't be making mistakes. Your god is alleged to be perfect and omnipotent. Shouldn't we expect that a perfect god would have produced a perfect Bible and insured that it remained perfect?

He is perfect. His word is perfect and just as He intended it to be. Those who read it and interpret it are imperfect.
