So your plan was to starve out the entire nation then?

Good plan dude. Very humane of you. :smiley24:

(The zero resources / ability to fight thing isn't exactly one of your more researched viewpoints)
Yes, and completely vaporizing men, women and children is humane.

And no, I would air drop them food until their leaders came to the negotiating table. But wait, they already were negotiating BEFORE the bombs dropped! But that didn't matter, because the Japanese were generally seen in a very racist light and frankly the average American didn't care if they all were killed.

Alright, whatever. Live in your bubble. Air drop food forever. LOL.

Is there anything about American past or present that you DO like?

Or is it all xenophobia, racist, terrorist, mass murderer type stuff?

Hey, I'm not the one advocating terrorism here.

Yes, there is a lot of things I love about America past and present. It just so happens that most of the topics in this forum deal with stuff America fucks up on. Mainly foreign policy.

That's me. Hi, my name is Scott, and I'm a big fat terrorist. If any of you good folks out there find any innocent women or children, would you please tag them for me. I'm behind in my extermination schedule. Puppy's are okay too tag also, but women and kids first definitely.

Why can't you just accept me for who I am? Why must I conform to your mold of society? Shouldn't I be treated with the same respect and good will that all other men and women are? I'm just so angry that I lash out with nuclear bombs and stuff, bla bla bla. (I think that actually makes me physically ill HAHA!!)

If they run, they're VC. If they stand still.... They're well disciplined VC.

I didn't call you specifically a terrorist (I don't think you are) , but the men who dropped the bombs certainly were.

I just don't see how you can be OK with vaporizing thousands of people who were going to surrender eventually. :dunno

Japan has a reputation for being very self sufficient. They can grow their own food and live just fine on the main island. What makes you think they would surrender if we simply stopped fighting and blockaded their nation? (Which would be totally impractical)

They were ready top come to the surrender table months before the bombs were dropped. The senior command of the Japanese military were giving in. Thats fact.

But still, I don't see how you can support mass murder.

I cringe every time I hear you say that. I could recomend several great books on the subject if you were genuinly interested.

I look at the estimated 850,000 lives those two bombs saved, and I rest easier.
I'm a WW2 buff myself. I could recommend you some too. I don't like the pacific theater though, boring compared to the European theater and the Eastern front. Urban combat is where its at. :D

Again, I don't think the bomb was the ONLY option.

Something occurs to me in all this and its that European countries have several hundred years experience of the whole issue of empires and spheres of influence and over a 4 or 5 hundred period have learnt some lessons that America as a relatively young country has still to learn with regards imposing your way of life on other cultures.Somewhere down the line America will learn those lessons.Take Vietnam for example the lessons learnt there were similar to what Napoleon learnt invading Russia over 200 years ago.Another would be The British Empire expanded due to the East India Company(fore runner of modern Corporations)Ended up needing hundreds of thousands of men in the Armies of Britain to control the natives of these regions. Similar to the issues in Iraq today(Reconstruction contracts and thousands of US Service personnel to help keep the locals quiet).

my hubby said the same thing sparkler, but not quite as politely;):D

i think the one poignant comment was from TOJ ..the last line of his post on this issue.

i will always have the world view on the bombing ,that it was a crime against humanity..but easy to say in retrospect.

ofcourse the issue of the middle east will come up here ,it always does.we here in britain have nuclear weapons but we own them except for the bit that gets them to the target ,those parts are american and are provided to all nuclear powers by the americans.ofcouse iraq etc will not not have these weapons of mass destruction because they have to buy the relevant parts from america .now if the makers have any sense they will have put in some gizmo there which means that aguided missile of this type can have its course altered (if i had that knowledge and capability thats what i would do)

some say that the world changed on 9/11,it didnt it changed the day the first nuclear weapon was used in warfare.

at some point i am very sure that a country such as iraq will make a dirty bomb and it will be used either in a US city or here in england.

britain finally finished paying off its debt to the US for all munitions etc used in WW2 in 1999.

No way man. There Pacific is simply amazing. Look at the planning/logistics/skill required for just an undefended amphibious landing. Then think about an amphibious landing against a deeply entrenched enemy who is literally dug into the mountains. Then imagine that enemy is so fanatical they won't give up until they're killed. It's fascinating stuff.

The main island of Okinawa is probably about 200 square miles. 100,000 Japanese were defending it. Of the 100,000, 83,000 were killed or wounded. Only 7000 or so were captured. Pure craziness to me.

I'm sure those 83,000 dead would have surrendered if we had blockaded the island and sent in air drops of food. ;)

I think the last Japanese warriors of WWII only surrendered in the 1990's!! :eek
